21. Repair and Reconstruction of Peripheral Nerve Injuries. Treatment with G-CSF and Stromal Vascular Fraction
Sammanfattning : While surgery is a cornerstone in treatment of peripheral nerve injuries, it is not a comprehensive approach, and outcome is unsatisfactory, especially sensory function. The present aim was to translate recent findings about stem- and progenitor cells to improve regenerative outcome, where the cells have to be autologous, available within the same surgical procedure, and minimally manipulated. 22. The search for reversibility of Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus : Aspects on intracranial pressure measurments and CSF volume alteration
Sammanfattning : BACKGROUND: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH) is still a syndrome generating more questions than answers. Today, research focuses mainly on two areas: understanding the pathophysiology – especially how the malfunctioning CSF system affects the brain parenchyma – and finding better methods to select patients benefiting from a shunt operation. 23. Glucocorticosteroid effects on cytokine production: studies in a glucocorticosteroid resistance model and in allergic airway disease
Sammanfattning : Glucocorticosteroids (GCS) are potent anti-inflammatory drugs, probably due to inhibitory effects on cytokine production. However, a small number of asthma patients seem GCS-resistant. Pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-2(IL-2) and IL-4, produced during allergic airway inflammation have been proposed to induce the resistance to GCS. LÄS MER
24. Pathogenesis of infections related to foreign devices within the cerebral ventricles
Sammanfattning : Coagulase-negative staphyloccoci (CoNS) are the most frequently isolated micro-organisms from infected cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunts and temporary ventricular drainage catheters, used in modern neurosurgery. CoNS originate from the skinflora of the patient or the surgeon and gain access to the surface of the implant at the insertion, but the infection can erupt up to a year later or more. LÄS MER
25. Apoptosis in the myelodysplastic syndromes : protective effect of G-CSF
Sammanfattning : Increased apoptosis of hematopoietic progenitor cells is a hallmark for the myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), and one of the main reasons for the ineffective hematopoiesis and subsequent cytopenia characteristic for the disease. In particular in low risk MDS, such as refractory anemia (RA) and refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts (RARS), severe transfusion-dependent anemia leading to constant fatigue and weakness and therefore reduced quality of life often constitutes the main clinical problem.
