1. C-reactive protein (CRP) and anti-CRP autoantibodies in systemic lupus erythematosus : a study on the occurrence and clinical implications of anti-CRP antibodies and CRP-mediated complement activation
Sammanfattning : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by production of a wide range of autoantibodies, multiple organ involvement and by local formation or tissue deposition of immune complexes (ICs) in the inflamed organs. In contrast to most systemic inflammatory conditions, and despite raised levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, SLE flares are rarely reflected by elevated C-reactive protein (CRP), an important acute-phase reactant in man with homologs in vertebrates and several invertebrates. 2. Diabetes in Young Adults : Remission, β-cell function and markers of inflammation
Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes is caused by immuno-mediated β-cell destruction leading to insulin deficiency and hyperglycaemia. The decline in β-cell function and the clinical course after diagnosis vary. Whether the process of destruction of the β-cells is associated with markers of a non-specific inflammatory response is unknown. LÄS MER
3. The importance of monocyte and granulocyte activation in rheumatoid arthritis and primary Sjögren's syndrome
Sammanfattning : Macrophages and neutrophils infiltrate the synovium and synovial fluid in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). These cells are considered to contribute to the destructive process in RA.The expression of adhesion and phagocytosis receptors on the surface of peripheral granulocytes and monocytes was increased in patients with RA. 4. Novel treatments of glioblastoma in experimental models
Sammanfattning : One of the major problems with malignant brain tumours, such as glioblastoma multiforme, is that despite being able to remove the major bulk of the tumour through surgery and treating the patients with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, we know that tumour cells have already spread throughout the brain. Furthermore, we now know that the glioblastoma cells effectively suppress the patients’ own anti-tumour response. LÄS MER
5. Treatment of Respiratory Tract Infections in Primary Care with special emphasis on Acute Otitis Media
Sammanfattning : Background and aims: Most respiratory tract infections (RTI) are self-limiting. Despite this, they are associated with high antibiotic prescription rates in general practice in Sweden. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the management of respiratory tract infections (RTIs) with particular emphasis on acute otitis media (AOM). LÄS MER
