1. Magnetism and Structure in Metallic Multilayers
Sammanfattning : The interplay between magnetism and structure has been studied in magnetic multilayers by electronic structure calculations based on density functional theory and analyzed in terms of models. The main ideas behind the Korringa-Kohn-Rostocker Green’s function method are described and the implementation of the coherent potential approximation is outlined. LÄS MER
2. Second-generation High-Order Harmonic Sources — From CPA to OPCPA
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents two sources of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation based on high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in gases. The sources were developed for experiments requiring high-flux harmonic beams or HHG pulses at high-repetition rate. These were used experimentally to image nano-scale objects. LÄS MER
3. Pathophysiology of blood-brain barrier, brain edema and cell injury following hyperthermia : New role of heat shock protein, nitric oxide and carbon monoxide : an experimental study in rat using light and electron microscopy
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the molecular mechanisms of hyperthermia induced brain damage in rats. The results clearly establish that hyperthermia caused by 4 h heat stress at 38° C is associated with a breakdown of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability which seems to be instrumental in causing brain edema and cell injury. 4. Creep modeling and first-principles investigation of high-temperature alloys
Sammanfattning : Stainless steels and nickel-based superalloys are materials that have been widely used to manufacture components servicing at high temperatures. Creep strength is one of the most important properties in such conditions. LÄS MER
5. Pharmacogenetic and pharmacokinetic studies of cyclophosphamide : in cell, animal and human
Sammanfattning : Cyclophosphamide (CPA) is widely used anti-cancer drug that has to be catalyzed by the cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme 2B6 as well as some other CYPs to exert its cytotoxic activity. A high degree of interindividual variation in CPA kinetics has been reported in both children and adult patients, which may be due to several factors such as concomitantly used drugs, variation in physiological status of individual patients and genetic polymorphism of the CYP enzymes.
