1. Development and Application of Genomic Resources in Non-model Bird Species
Sammanfattning : Understanding the genetic basis of biological processes is a fundamental component of modern ecology and evolutionary biology studies. With the recent advent of next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, it is now possible to perform large genome and transcriptome projects for ecologically important non-model species. LÄS MER
2. Analysis of genetic variations in cancer
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to apply recently developed technologies for genomic variation analyses, and to ensure quality of the generated information for use in preclinical cancer research.Faster access to a patients’ full genomic sequence for a lower cost makes it possible for end users such as clinicians and physicians to gain a more complete understanding of the disease status of a patient and adjust treatment accordingly. 3. Implications of Local Puumala Hantavirus Genetics and Epidemiology for Diagnostics and Vaccine Development
Sammanfattning : Puumala viruses, a member of the Hantavirus genus in the Bunyaviridae family, are enveloped by a lipid bilayer and possesses a tripartite single stranded RNA genome with negative polarity. The hantaviruses encode four proteins: a nucleocapsid protein (N), two membrane spanning glycoproteins (GN and GC) and a RNA dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). LÄS MER
4. Trypanosoma cruzi genome plasticity and evolution
Sammanfattning : Trypanosoma cruzi, a protozoan from the Kinetoplastidae family, is the etiologic agent of Chagas disease, a major public health problem affecting mostly the poorest areas of Latin America. Due to the complex nature of the parasite’s genome it has been impossible to produce a complete reference genome sequence, thus hampering the implementation of post- genomic approaches to unveil the mechanisms of generation of antigenic variation and the identification of new drug targets. 5. Computational exploration of human genome variation
Sammanfattning : In studies of human genome variation, researchers attempt to identify the DNA sequence differences between our genomes that contribute substantially to variation that can be observed on a physical level (phenotype). Genetic variation can also be used to study population dynamics in human history, and how evolutionary forces have shaped the human genome. LÄS MER
