16. Neuroactive steroids and rat CNS
Sammanfattning : Several studies suggest profound effects on mood and cognition by neuroactive steroids. Estrogen alone or in combination with antidepressant drugs affecting the serotonin system has been used to treat mood disorders. On the other hand, progesterone is related to negative effects on mood and memory. LÄS MER
17. Characterizing and modulating the effects of ionizing radiation to the juvenile hippocampus
Sammanfattning : Survival rates after childhood cancer treatment have improved, leading to a growing population of survivors. Radiotherapy is an important tool for curing cancer in the brain. Unfortunately, radiotherapy is associated with late side effects e.g. LÄS MER
18. Cyanide and central nervous system : a study with focus on brain dopamine
Sammanfattning : The brain is a major target site in acute cyanide intoxication, as indicated by several symptoms and signs. Cyanide inhibits the enzyme cytochrome oxidase. This inhibition causes impaired oxygen utilization in all cells affected, severe metabolic acidosis and inhibited production of energy. LÄS MER
19. Transcription Factor AP-2 in Relation to Serotonergic Functions in the Central Nervous System
Sammanfattning : Eukaryotic gene transcription plays a regulatory role in mammalian developmental processes. It has been shown that transcriptional control is an important mechanism for specification of neurotransmitter phenotypes. LÄS MER
20. In vivo properties of neural stem cells after transplantation into the rat brain-Studies of phenotypic differentiation and functional integration using cell-specific labelling and electrophysiological techniques
Sammanfattning : In the present thesis, we have examined the in vivo properties of in vitro expanded human and rat neural stem-and progenitor cells after transplantation into the neonatal and adult rat brain. The survival and differentiation of the grafted cells were assessed using species-specific antisera, and pre-labelling with the reporter gene green fluorescent protein (GFP). LÄS MER
