21. Titanium Oxide and Bone Anchorage: Role of the Complement System, and Delivery of Osteoporosis Drugs from Mesoporous TiO2
Sammanfattning : The clinical success of bone implants of titanium (Ti) is largely ascribed to the biological performance and the physicochemical properties of the outermost titanium(IV)dioxide (TiO2) layer. Several advancements have been done on TiO2 in order to optimize its healing and anchorage to bone, and there is a need for further understanding and control of the molecular reactions preceding long-term osseointegration. 22. Studies of the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy and Henoch-Schönlein purpura, with special reference to Streptococcus pyogenes infections and complement
Sammanfattning : IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common form of primary glomerulonephritis and Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) the most common form of vasculitis in childhood. HSP may affect kidneys, a complication termed Henoch-Schönlein nephropathy (HSN). Renal pathology in HSN resembles that seen in IgAN. The pathogenesis of IgAN and HSP is so far unclear. LÄS MER
23. Development and evaluation of immunoassays for complement diagnostics
Sammanfattning : Laboratory analyses of human body fluids play an important role in clinical diagnosis. This thesis comprises projects in which various immune assays have been developed and evaluated as complement diagnostics in both plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). LÄS MER
24. Structural and functional studies of novel viral complement inhibitors
Sammanfattning : Viruses have developed several strategies to evade the complement system, a part of the immune system. The fourth open reading frame of the human virus Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) encodes a type 1 transmembrane protein. LÄS MER
25. Complement evasion strategies of human pathogens - the evolutionary arms race
Sammanfattning : Although the complement system, a pivotal component of innate immunty, is centrally involved in host defense against pathogens, its overactivation or deregulation may excessively amplify inflammation and contribute to immunopathology. Periodontitis, an oral infection-driven chronic inflammatory disease, has been linked with complement disruption by periodontal bacteria, resulting in inflammation and pathogenesis. LÄS MER
