  1. 1. Investigations of human cortical processing of gentle touch. A study with time-resolved electro-magnetic signal analysis

    Författare :Elin Eriksson Hagberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Aβ afferent; C-tactile; touch; EEG; MEG; SEEG;

    Sammanfattning : The present work summarizes investigations of the temporal correlates of brain activity elicited by gentle, moving touch on the hairy skin in healthy participants and in epilepsy patients. Light touch to the hairy skin activates two distinct afferent classes: fast conducting, Aβ afferents and slowly conducting C-tactile (CT) afferents. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Affective touch throughout life: from cortical processing in infancy to touch perception in adulthood

    Författare :Emma H. Jönsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Affective touch; Touch perception; Cortical activation; C-tactile afferents;

    Sammanfattning : Affective, interpersonal touch is important for forming and maintaining social bonds. In the hairy skin of humans there is a specific type of nerve fibers called C-tactile (CT) afferents which are optimally activated by a light stroking of the skin, like a caress. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Machine learning for identification of brain activity patterns with applications in gentle touch processing

    Författare :Malin Björnsdotter Åberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Somatosensory; Machine learning; Pattern recognition; fMRI; Support vector machines; Neuroscience; Brain; BOLD; Signal processing; Artificial intelligence; Touch; Human; Unmyelinated; Sensory; Affective;

    Sammanfattning : Since the first mention of artificial intelligence in the 1950s, the field of machine learning has provided increasingly appealing tools for recognition of otherwise unintelligible pattern representations in complex data structures. Human brain activity, acquired using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), is a prime example of such complex data where the utility of pattern recognition has been demonstrated in a wide range of studies recently (Haynes et al. 4. 4. Pain, Touch, and Decision Making : Behavioral and Brain Responses to Affective Somatosensory Stimulation

    Författare :Lina Koppel; India Morrison; Daniel Västfjäll; Gustav Tinghög; Johannes Haushofer; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Stimulation of sensory nerves can give rise to powerful affective experiences. Noxious stimuli can give rise to pain, an unpleasant experience which, in turn, causes suffering and constitutes a major societal burden. Touch, on the other hand, can feel pleasant and plays an important role in social relationships and well-being. LÄS MER

  5. 5. A pathway for pleasant touch: linking peripheral receptors to central processing and hedonic experience

    Författare :Line Sofie Löken; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :pleasant; touch; microneurography; human; CT afferent; unmyelinated;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the mechanisms underpinning pleasant touch, describes a pathway from peripheral nerve endings in the skin to the insular cortex, and relates these findings to the subjective hedonic experience of touch. In Paper I, the relationship between primary afferent encoding and perception of pleasantness was investigated by combining microneurography recordings from human mechanoreceptors with psychophysical measurements during soft brush stroking at 6 different velocities between 0.
