  1. 1. A Signal Processing Approach to Practical Neurophysiology : A Search for Improved Methods in Clinical Routine and Research

    Författare :Björn Hammarberg; Dick Stegeman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Systemteknik; matched filter; asynchronous detection; Kalman filter; initialization; MHT; Wiener deconvolution; line source model; electromyography; needle EMG; motor unit potential; MUAP; mean fiber concentration; jitter; microneurography; C-fiber; spike sorting; Systemteknik; Systems engineering; Systemteknik; Signal Processing; signalbehandling;

    Sammanfattning : Signal processing within the neurophysiological field is challenging and requires short processing time and reliable results. In this thesis, three main problems are considered.First, a modified line source model for simulation of muscle action potentials (APs) is presented. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Dendritic and axonal ion channels supporting neuronal integration : From pyramidal neurons to peripheral nociceptors

    Författare :Marcus Petersson; Erik Fransén; Theodore Cummins; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ion channels; computational modeling; simulations; dendrites; axons; TRP; hippocampus; C-fiber nociceptors; pain;

    Sammanfattning : The nervous system, including the brain, is a complex network with billions of complex neurons. Ion channels mediate the electrical signals that neurons use to integrate input and produce appropriate output, and could thus be thought of as key instruments in the neuronal orchestra. LÄS MER

  3. 3. A pathway for pleasant touch: linking peripheral receptors to central processing and hedonic experience

    Författare :Line Sofie Löken; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :pleasant; touch; microneurography; human; CT afferent; unmyelinated;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the mechanisms underpinning pleasant touch, describes a pathway from peripheral nerve endings in the skin to the insular cortex, and relates these findings to the subjective hedonic experience of touch. In Paper I, the relationship between primary afferent encoding and perception of pleasantness was investigated by combining microneurography recordings from human mechanoreceptors with psychophysical measurements during soft brush stroking at 6 different velocities between 0. 4. 4. Itch and Pain Inhibitory Mechanisms in Humans - evidence for a differential control of nociceptive senses

    Författare :Hans-Jörgen Nilsson; Neurofysiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsychology; Neurology; Human; TENS; Somatosensory; Pruritus; Analgesia; Pain; Nociception; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : It is known that stimulation of thin nerve afferents can inhibit itch and pain and that the nociceptive systems have a detailed topographical organisation, with subsystems exhibiting specific excitatory and inhibitory receptive fields. On this basis, a new technique was developed, termed Cutaneous Field Stimulation (CFS), that electrically stimulates thin nerve fibers innervating specific skin fields. LÄS MER

  5. 5. The analgesic mechanisms of buprenorphine

    Författare :Poli Francois Kouya; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Buprenorphine; morphine; cross-tolerance; g- opioid receptors; inbred mice.;

    Sammanfattning : Buprenorphine, a derivative of thebaine, is a semi-synthetic opiate and a partial p-opioid receptor agonist. Buprenorphine is also a weak kappa-opioid receptor antagonist. Buprenorphine is used clinically as an analgesic and for maintenance therapy of opiate-dependent subjects because it produces limited withdrawal symptoms. LÄS MER
