16. Molecular mechanisms involved in prokaryotic cycling of labile dissolved organic matter in the sea
Sammanfattning : Roughly half of the global primary production originates from microscopic phytoplankton in marine ecosystems, converting carbon dioxide into organic matter. This organic matter pool consists of a myriad of compounds that fuel heterotrophic bacterioplankton. LÄS MER
17. Glacier-Ocean Interactions in the Arctic : Contemporary calving and frontal melt from field observations, remote sensing, and numerical modelling
Sammanfattning : Globally, glaciers are losing mass as a result of the changing climate, with this mass loss having a considerable societal impact through rising sea levels. Glaciers which terminate in the oceans are particularly vulnerable to changing external conditions as a result of high sensitivity at their marine margins. LÄS MER
18. Uptake Processes of Polychlorinated Biphenyls at the Base of the Pelagic Food Web
Sammanfattning : Hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) are persistent, toxic to biota and are known to bioaccumulate in food webs. In this thesis, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were used as model compounds to study the fate and transport of HOCs in the aquatic environment. LÄS MER
19. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons : DNA damage and cell signaling
Sammanfattning : Oxidative stress is a threat to our wellbeing. The formation of reactive oxygen species may result in oxidative lesions in DNA and RNA. When challenging A549 cells with 18O-labeled hydrogen peroxide, we found that RNA was between 14-25 times more sensitive to [18O]-8-oxoGuo formation than [18O]-8-oxodGuo formation in DNA. LÄS MER
20. Carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons : theoretical, molecular, in vitro and cellular characterization of biotransformation and DNA damage
Sammanfattning : Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread mutagenic and carcinogenic environmental pollutants, which require metabolic activation to electrophilic intermediates and subsequent covalent binding to critical targets in DNA to elicit their biological activity. Bayand fjord-region diol epoxides (DEs) have been identified as the ultimate mutagenic and carcinogenic metabolites of PAHs. LÄS MER
