  1. 1. Star-forming Dwarf Galaxies : Internal motions and evolution

    Författare :Thomas Marquart; Nils Bergvall; Janice Lee; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Galaxy; Galaxies; Dynamics; Kinematics; Starburst; Dwarf Galaxies; Blue Compact Galaxies; Star Formation; Galaxy mergers; 3D-Spectroscopy; Spectroscopy; Astronomy; Astronomi;

    Sammanfattning : The study of dwarf galaxies is important in order to better understand the physics of the young universe and how larger galaxies form and evolve. In this work we focus on Blue Compact Galaxies (BCGs) which havemuch enhanced star formation (starbursts), causing blue colours and strong emission line spectra. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Unveiling the nature of blue compact galaxies

    Författare :Genoveva Micheva; Göran Östlin; Evan Skillman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; blue compact galaxies; starbursts; host galaxy; stellar populations; surface photometry; optical and NIR broadband; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Sammanfattning : Blue compact galaxies (BCGs) are gas-rich star-forming low redshift galaxies with low metallicities. In some cases the relative strength of the starburst can be so high that it completely dominates the light output of the galaxy, an obstacle which has been countered by deeper optical imaging data and observations in the near infra-red (NIR) regime. 3. 3. On the origin and evolution of blue compact galaxies

    Författare :Göran A. Östlin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astronomy; galaxies - compact; formation; evolution; starburst; interactions; dwarf; photometry; kinematics and dynamics; low surface brightness galaxies; Astronomi; Astronomy and astrophysics; Astronomi och astrofysik; astronomi; Astronomy;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis is focused on the origin and evolution of blue compact galaxies (BCGs). BCGs are low mass galaxies characterised by blue colours, low chemical abundances and high star formation rates. The gas consumtion time scale is considerable shorter than the age of the universe and thus the high star formation rate must be transient. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Super Star Clusters in Blue Compact Galaxies : Evidence for a near-infrared flux excess and properties of the starburst phase

    Författare :Angela Adamo; Göran Östlin; Erik Zackrisson; Richard de Grjis; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; starburst galaxy-extragalactic star clusters-dwarf merger; Astronomy and astrophysics; Astronomi och astrofysik; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Sammanfattning : Luminous Blue compact galaxies (BCGs) are metal-poor actively star-forming systems, characterised by bright ultraviolet and blue luminosities. Hubble Space Telescope high-resolution data have revealed that the luminous star-forming knots in these galaxies are composed of hundreds of young massive star clusters. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Quasars and Low Surface Brightness Galaxies as Probes of Dark Matter

    Författare :Erik Zackrisson; Nils Bergvall; Kjell Olofsson; Julianne Dalcanton; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astronomy; Cosmology: dark matter; gravitational lensing; quasars: general; quasars: redshift; galaxies: halos; galaxies: formation; galaxies: stellar content; Astronomi; Astronomy and astrophysics; Astronomi och astrofysik;

    Sammanfattning : Most of the matter in the Universe appears to be in some form which does not emit or absorb light. While evidence for the existence of this dark matter has accumulated over the last seventy years, its nature remains elusive. LÄS MER
