Sammanfattning : Streptococcus pyogenes is an important human pathogen frequently colonizing the throat and skin of humans. To facilitate colonization and spread and to avoid the host immune defence, streptococci are endowed with a variety of virulence factors, two of which are investigated in this thesis namely streptolysin O (SLO) and M protein. Sammanfattning : The recognition of microbes or microbial products by leukocytes is a key event in innate immunity. Binding of microbial products to cell surface receptors on phagocytes induce a response that includes the production of inflammatory mediators. One such mediator is the cytokine tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF). LÄS MER
3. Selenium Compounds and Antioxidant Capacity in Bovine Milk. Studies on Glutathione Peroxidase, Bioavailability and Electrochemical Techniques
Sammanfattning : The efficacy and function of antioxidants have been intensively studied in foods and other biological systems in recent decades. This thesis concerns different aspects of the antioxidant properties of bovine milk, with emphasis on measurement of the total antioxidant capacity (TAC), the activity of the selenium-containing glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx), and the bioavailability of selenium from bovine milk in humans. Sammanfattning : HAMLET (Human alpha-lactalbumin made lethal to tumor cells) is a molecular complex of alpha-lactalbumin and oleic acid, that induces programmed cells death in tumor cells but leaves healthy differentiated cells unaffected. It has a broad anti-tumor activity as more than 40 cell lines from different origin are sensitive. LÄS MER
Sammanfattning : The common human pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes is the causative agent of numerous mild and severe clinical conditions. It expresses a number of secreted or cell wall-anchored proteins that modulate the human immune system and facilitate colonization and spread of the pathogen in the human host. During S. LÄS MER
