11. X-ray and neutron μCT of biomedical samples: from image acquisition to quantification
Sammanfattning : Even though the validity of x-ray computed tomography in the analysis of biomedical samples is nowadays undisputed, the more recent imaging techniques and more advanced instruments (such as synchrotrons) are still relatively unknown to many medical doctors that could benefit from them. The doctoral work presented in this thesis joins a collective effort from the imaging community to demonstrate potential applications of advanced x-ray and neutron imaging methods to preclinical medical research, with the hope of contributing to reach a “critical mass” in the medical community and in the public opinion as well. 12. GC-MS based metabolomics – Development of a next generation GC-MS method and its application to nutrition and biomarker research
Sammanfattning : Metabolomics, the measurement of a broad range of small molecules in a sample, is maturing as a field in analytical chemistry and becoming a standard research tool in biological sciences for helping to generate a wider understanding of the complex biological mechanisms behind, for example, development of disease and effects of diet on health. Metabolomics analysis is generally divided into either targeted or untargeted metabolomics. LÄS MER
13. Organic electronics for precise delivery of neurotransmitters
Sammanfattning : Organic electronic materials, that is, carbon-based compounds that conduct electricity, have emerged as candidates for improving the interface between conventional electronics and biological systems. The softness of these materials matches the elasticity of biological tissue better than conventional electronic conductors, allowing better contact to tissue, and the mixed ionic-electronic conductivity can improve the signal transduction between electronic devices and electrically excitable cells. 14. High resolution laboratory x-ray tomography for biomedical research : From design to application
Sammanfattning : Laboratory x-ray micro- and nano-tomography are emerging techniques in biomedical research. Through the use of phase-contrast, sufficient contrast can be achieved in soft tissue to support medical studies. LÄS MER
15. Development of high-Tc SQUID magnetometers for on-scalp MEG
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the development of high critical temperature superconducting quantum interference device (high-Tc SQUID) magnetometers based on bicrystal grain boundary and nanowire junctions for the potential use in on-scalp magnetoencephalography (MEG), which is a new generation MEG technique with reduced sensor-to-subject standoff distances.MEG is a method of mapping neural dynamics in the human brain by recording the magnetic fields produced by neural currents.
