  1. 6. The Otter (Lutra lutra) in Sweden : Contaminants and Health

    Författare :Anna Roos; Jan Örberg; Björn Brunström; Katrin Lundstedt-Enkel; Susan Shaw; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Otter Lutra lutra ; PCB; DDT; PFAAs; reproduction; bone; time trends; Biologi med inriktning mot ekotoxikologi; Biology with specialization in Environmental Toxicology;

    Sammanfattning : In the 1950s the otter started to decline in numbers and distribution in Sweden and other parts of Europe. In 1972 a game law came into force, listing otter as a species that if found dead should be reported and sent to the authorities. The numbers of dead otters reported from different areas indicate population status and distribution. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Novel Endpoints To Unravel Developmental Neurotoxicity : From DNA methylation responses to methylmercury to the in vitro identification of endocrine disruptors

    Författare :Andrea Cediel-Ulloa; Joëlle Rüegg; Pamela J. Lein; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Developmental neurotoxicity; Methylmercury; DNA methylation; Endocrine disruptors; in vitro assay development; Biology with specialization in Environmental Toxicology; Biologi med inriktning mot miljötoxikologi;

    Sammanfattning : The developing brain is especially sensitive to environmental stressors due to its dependence on the precise spatiotemporal regulation of multiple signals, and the long time period required for its formation. Some chemicals can interfere with molecular and cellular processes driving brain development, including epigenetic processes such as DNA methylation. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Developmental Neurotoxicity of Environmental Pollutants : Effects on neuronal protein markers after neonatal exposure

    Författare :Iwa Lee; Henrik Viberg; Elena Jazin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental neurotoxicity; Neonatal exposure; Protein markers; Environmental pollutants; Biologi med inriktning mot ekotoxikologi; Biology with specialization in Environmental Toxicology;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis focused on investigations of the developmental neurotoxic effects of bisphenol A (BPA) or perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), after a single neonatal exposure, during a critical period of the brain development in mice.BPA is a well-known industrial chemical used in the production of polymer products and PFHxS is used as an industrial additive as a surfactant. 4. 9. Neurodevelopmental Consequences of Exposure to Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) and Related Drugs : Experimental studies in mice

    Författare :Gaëtan Philippot; Robert Fredriksson; Vesna Jevtovic-Todorovic; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; paracetamol acetaminophen ; developmental neurotoxicology; delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol THC ; ibuprofen; endocannabinoid system; neonatal mice; brain growth spurt; behavior; Biology with specialization in Environmental Toxicology; Biologi med inriktning mot miljötoxikologi;

    Sammanfattning : Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is the analgesic pharmaceutical most commonly used during pregnancy and early life. While therapeutic doses of paracetamol are considered harmless during these periods, recent findings in both humans and rodents suggest a link between developmental exposure to paracetamol and behavioral consequences later in life. 5. 10. Progestagenic Aquatic Contaminants Act as Potent Androgens in Fish : Experimental Studies in Three-spined Stickleback and Zebrafish

    Författare :Johan Svensson; Björn Brunström; Ingvar Brandt; Ian Mayer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Pharmaceuticals as contaminants; Progestins; Androgenic properties; Fish; Biologi med inriktning mot ekotoxikologi; Biology with specialization in Environmental Toxicology;

    Sammanfattning : The extensive use of pharmaceuticals and their poor removal by wastewater treatment plants has led to the emergence of pharmaceutical compounds as global aquatic contaminants. Progestins, the synthetic analogues to progesterone (P4), are receiving increasing attention as contaminants and have been shown to impair reproduction in fish and amphibians at low ng L-1 concentrations.
