  1. 1. Biomarkers aiming at cancer risk estimation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

    Författare :Hans Helleberg; Kimmo Peltonen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical Biology; fysikalisk biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), a family of compounds that are formed in incomplete combustion of organic matter, occur as general pollutants in air and food. Exposure to PAH is, according to preliminary estimates, associated with non-acceptable cancer risks showing the need for improved data to be used in risk estimation. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Development and Application of Genomic Resources in Non-model Bird Species

    Författare :Biao Wang; Jacob Höglund; Christopher Wheat; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; genome; transcriptome; next generation sequencing; non-model species; bioinformatics; reference guided assembly; RNA-Seq; comparative genomics; gene expression; major histocompatibility complex; single nucleotide polymorphism; microsatellite; Biologi; Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Understanding the genetic basis of biological processes is a fundamental component of modern ecology and evolutionary biology studies. With the recent advent of next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, it is now possible to perform large genome and transcriptome projects for ecologically important non-model species. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Fluorescent quantum dots and graphene-based sensors for forensic applications

    Författare :Johnny Jussi; Ying Fu; Simon Dunne; Qin Wang; Ingemar Petermann; Xin Wang; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Graphene; Quantum Dots; Blood; Forensics; Drugs; Biologisk fysik; Biological Physics;

    Sammanfattning : A key emerging concept within the forensic sciences today areportable measurementdevices, where a much more efficient usage of the resources involved with crime-solving is possible if confirmatory measurements can be realised directly at a crimescene with such devices. Today, the majority of the presently used methods duringcriminal investigation at a crime scene involves measurements of a presumptivenature, which is a vital tool as it enables the screening of samples. 4. 4. Uncovering the genetics underlying host-parasite interactions during Plasmodium falciparum malaria transmission

    Författare :Mubasher Mohammed; Johan Ankarklev; David Serre; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Malaria; Plasmodium falciparum; Genomics; single-cell RNA-seq; Parasite cell fate; Anopheles gambiae; ApiAP2 transcription factors; driver genes; computational biology; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Sammanfattning : In eukaryotes, cellular differentiation is often orchestrated by programmed arrays of activation and repression of genes underlying the specific phenotypes of cell-types. To complete its life cycle, the single-celled Apicomplexan parasite Plasmodium falciparum, the most deadly of the human malaria parasites, must repeatedly differentiate and convert into unique cell types that can exploit niches within their human and mosquito hosts. 5. 5. Molecular and cellular analysis of Lhx2 function in hematopoietic stem cells

    Författare :Karin Richter; Leif Carlsson; Andrew Elefanty; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hematopoietic stem cells; Lhx2; cell lines; self renewal; SCF; IL-6; chronic myeloproliferative disorder; global gene expression analysis; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The formation of blood, hematopoiesis, is a dynamic process originating from a small number of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). To sustain hematopoiesis throughout life HSCs have the unique capacity to differentiate into all mature hematopoietic lineages as well as generating more HSCs by a mechanism referred to as self-renewal.
