    Sammanfattning : The fast appearance of benzodiazepine analogues, referred to as new psychoactive substance (NPS) or designer benzodiazepines, requires the continuous update of detection methods in order to keep up with the latest drugs on the recreational drug market. Moreover, as usually only limited information on toxicity and excretion patterns of these new drugs exists, this needs to be evaluated to report on adverse effects and to determine suitable targets for drug testing.     Sammanfattning : Aim: The aims of the study were to 1) analyse a possible association between changes in drug sales and the occurrence of drug poisoning suicides 2) assess the role of benzodiazepines in elderly suicides 3) analyse changes in suicide mortality after the introduction of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, SSRIs 4) examine physicians' inclination to prescribe benzodiazepines in low and high prescribing areas.     Sammanfattning : Background: Prescription sedatives are efficient in the treatment of anxiety and sleeping disorders, but are associated with a risk of misuse and dependence, as well as an increased risk of accidents, injuries and overdoses, both in the general population and especially in individuals with other substance misuse. The present thesis aims to investigate prescription sedative use and misuse in two kinds of samples - in the general population, with focus on its association with subjective health and quality life, and in the subpopulation of individuals with opioid dependence, with focus on treatment outcome in opioid maintenance treatment and mortality. One study is presented regarding effects of alcohol, and two studies regarding effects of hypnotics. A driving simulator was used in all three studies.
