1. A Rhetoric of Ambivalence : The Memory World of the Nazi Perpetrator in Jonathan Littell’s The Kindly Ones
Sammanfattning : In Jonathan Littell’s The Kindly Ones (Les Bienveillantes, 2006), a discrepancy is found between the historical account and the personal story, indicating the major ambivalence that arises from the creation of a historical world (noesis) as opposed to a fictional world (poiesis). This major ambivalence is connected to a range of minor ambivalences (and other elements of uncertainty) that are related to the novel’s treatment of the historical period of World War II in ways that unsettle and defamiliarize the typical standards of Holocaust representations. 2. Rape and Religion in English Renaissance Literature : A Topical Study of Four Texts by Shakespeare, Drayton, and Middleton
Sammanfattning : This study argues that Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus (1594) and The Rape of Lucrece (1594), Michael Drayton’s Matilda (1594) and Thomas Middleton’s The Ghost of Lucrece (1600) are, in ways hitherto not realised, topically concerned with the religious controversies in the wake of the English Reformation. This concern is discussed on a general level of interest related to religious attitudes and practices significant at the time of writing, and on a specific level pertaining to events surrounding the capture of the Jesuit poet Robert Southwell in 1592, which included the rape or seduction of a Catholic woman. Sammanfattning : The thesis contains selected Latin poetry by the Swedish poet Magnus Rönnow (1665‒1735), composed during the Great Northern War. The Carolean age (1654–1718) was the hey-day of Latin literature, eloquence and poetry in Sweden. Rönnow was one of the last Latin poets in this tradition, and indeed one of the most outstanding.
