  1. 21. Formation, uptake and bioaccumulation of methylmercury in coastal seas : a baltic sea case study

    Författare :Aleksandra Skrobonja; Erik Björn; Agneta Andersson; Anne L. Soerensen; Marc Amyot; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mercury; methylmercury; bioaccumulation; mesososm; isotope tracers; methylation; demethylation; stability constant; kinetic model; coastal sea; ICPMS; LC-MS MS;

    Sammanfattning : Methylmercury (MeHg) is a potent neurotoxin which can bioaccumulate to harmful levels in aquatic food webs. Methylmercury formation is a predominantly biotic process which involves phylogenically diverse microorganisms (e.g. iron- or sulfate-reducing bacteria). LÄS MER

  2. 22. Ancient genomics of Baltic seals : Insights on the past Baltic grey seal and harp seal populations

    Författare :Maiken Hemme Bro-Jørgensen; Kerstin Lidén; Morten Tange Olsen; Aikaterini Glykou; Olle Karlsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Ancient DNA; Baltic Sea; DNA preservation; extinction; mitogenome; seal hunting; sex identification; arkeologi med inriktning mot laborativ arkeologi; Scientific Archaeology;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis aims to study and describe the ancient populations of grey and harp seals in the Baltic Sea, and to present new methodological approaches for general use in ancient DNA studies.The dissertation is comprised of five studies: a review of the use of paleogenetics in studying ancient human-marine mammal interactions; a method paper investigating patterns of DNA preservation in ancient pinniped samples; a method paper presenting a genetic sex identification method for ancient pinnipeds; a population genomic study of the Baltic grey seal; and a population genomic study of the now extinct Baltic harp seal. 3. 23. Man, murres and modern fisheries : A case study in the Baltic Sea

    Författare :Martina Kadin; Henrik Österblom; Olof Olsson; Carl Folke; Morten Frederiksen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Seabirds; ecosystem dynamics; fisheries; indicators; ecosystem services; Baltic Sea; common murre; common guillemot; Uria aalge; naturresurshushållning; Natural Resources Management;

    Sammanfattning : Overfishing and climate change put increasing pressure on marine systems, with effects on commercially targeted fish and top predators dependent on these resources. To achieve sustainable resource use, governance mechanisms need to incorporate knowledge about ecosystem dynamics. LÄS MER

  4. 24. External Growth Control of Baltic Sea Cyanobacteria

    Författare :Anna Zakrisson; Ulf Larsson; Jakob Walve; Elena Gorokhova; Catherine Legrand; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cyanobacteria; Baltic Sea; diazotrophs; diazotrophy; heterocysts; primary productivity; stable isotopes; sewage treatment; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The overall aim of the study was to provide better insights to the ecological role and impact of cyanobacteria in Baltic Sea (BS) bay, coastal and open sea areas. Biomass and heterocyst development of diazotrophic, heterocystous cyanobacteria were monitored over several years simultaneously as physical parameters such as nutrients and temperature. LÄS MER

  5. 25. Pharmaecological perspectives : Exposure studies using coastal Baltic Sea organisms

    Författare :Hanna Oskarsson; Linda Kumblad; Ann-Kristin Eriksson Wiklund; Johan Eklöf; Nina Cedergreen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Pharmaceuticals; Baltic Sea; Mytilus edulis trossulus; Fucus vesiculosus; Ceramium tenuicorne; Gammarus spp.; Direct effects; Inter-specific interactions; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the effects of pharmaceutical substances on coastal Baltic Sea organisms. Despite an increasing awareness of the occurrence of pharmaceuticals in various aquatic compartments, current knowledge of their possible effects on non-target organisms is limited.
