1. Allochthonous and autochthonous carbon sources of lake bacterioplankton
Sammanfattning : Organic substrates for pelagic bacteria are derived from dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the water column that originates either from primary production from within the lake itself (autochthonous), or import of organic matter from the terrestrial watershed (allochthonous production). This thesis addresses the utilization of allochthonous versus autochthonous carbon (C) sources by lake bacterioplankton. LÄS MER
2. Riverine sources of bioreactive macroelements and their impact on bacterioplankton metabolism in a recipient boreal estuary
Sammanfattning : The loading of terrestrially derived macroelements, such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total nitrogen (N), and total phosphorus (P), to inland and estuarine waters is increasing in the northern hemisphere. Thesemacroelements often limit heterotrophic bacterioplankton metabolism (production and respiration), which in turn influence food web structures, exchange of greenhouse gases between the atmosphere and aquatic systems and oxygen consumption in estuarine ecosystems. 3. Bacterioplankton in the Baltic Sea : influence of allochthonous organic matter and salinity
Sammanfattning : Climate change is expected to increase the precipitation ~30% in higher latitudes during the next century, increasing the land runoff via rivers to aquatic ecosystems. The Baltic Sea will receive higher river discharges, accompanied by larger input of allochthonous dissolved organic matter (DOM) from terrestrial ecosystems. LÄS MER
4. Attached Bacterial Communities in Lakes – Habitat-Specific Differences
Sammanfattning : For many years, the importance of microorganisms attached to surfaces in littoral zones and wetlands has been disregarded when describing aquatic ecosystem dynamics. Supporting evidence is scarce but convincing that these microbial communities are not only very productive but can often serve as major regulators of nutrient and carbon dynamics in many freshwaters. 5. Bacterioplankton production and biomass in two lakes of different trophic status : Responses to inorganic nutrients, organic carbon, and other planktonic biota
Sammanfattning : Bacterioplankton growth is affected by physical, chemical, and biological factors. Theavailability of energy and carbon sources, as well as inorganic nutrients, are of specialinterest when studying regulation of heterotrophic bacterioplankton in lakes. LÄS MER
