1. Trichoderma viride alamethicin and plant cells - Action, response and resistance
Sammanfattning : Alamethicin is a membrane active peptide secreted from the soil-living fungus Trichoderma viride. When coexisting with T. Viride, plant roots are exposed to alamethicin, which has the ability to elicit formation of volatile compounds involved in pathogen defence. LÄS MER
2. Macromolecular interactions, Consequences on carbohydrate metabolism
Sammanfattning : Most cells are crowded with solutes, enzymes, nucleic acids, structural proteins and membranes. Crowding promotes macromolecular interactions and determines major properties of the cellular environment such as viscosity, diffusion and inhomogeneity. LÄS MER
3. Urbanization and Education : The Effect of Childhood Urban Residency on Educational Attainment
Sammanfattning : Essay I: Does rural to urban migration in developing countries improve the opportunities available to children? And does childhood urban exposure increase educational attainment? Using census data for 14 African countries combined with an age-at-move design, I show that childhood exposure to cities significantly raises primary school completion, school attendance, and literacy rates. The increase in educational attainment is robust to the inclusion of household fixed effects, visible in all subgroups and countries, and particularly large for girls. LÄS MER
4. Piezoelectric and ferroelectric device technologies for microwave oscillators
Sammanfattning : The purpose of this thesis is to investigate piezoelectric and ferroelectric thin film device technologies for application in microwave oscillators.Thin film varactors based on ferroelectric materials are considered. LÄS MER
5. Methylsulphonyl-chlorobenzenes and the olfactory system : Comparative toxicity of the 2,5- and 2,6-dichlorinated isomers in mice
Sammanfattning : Methyl sulphone metabolites of chlorinated aryl hydrocarbons are persistentenvironmental pollutants that can bioaccumulate in animals and humans. Little is known about the toxicological effects of these metabolites and this thesis is an attempt to increase this limited knowledge. LÄS MER
