  1. 6. Mechanisms of failure and survival in the anoxic fish brain : With focus on the crucian carp

    Författare :Dan Johansson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Biologi; Biology; Biologi; limnologi; Limnology;

    Sammanfattning : Neural responses to anoxia were studied in two fish species, the rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss) and the crucian carp (Carassius carassius). The rainbow troutbrain reacted to anoxia by a massive release of excitatory amino acids and K+ into theextracellular compartment, in a fashion very much like the brain of mammals duringanoxia. 2. 7. GLIAL HEMICHANNELS: A NEW ROUTE FOR CHEMICAL COMMUNICATION IN BRAIN

    Författare :Malin Stridh; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :astrocyte; antioxidant; connexin; hemichannel; glutathione; efflux; glutamate;

    Sammanfattning : The extracellular neurochemistry determines normal brain function and the faith of neurons after insults such as stroke. This thesis concerns the effect of extracellular events related to intense neuronal stimulation and stroke, i.e. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Role of Neuropeptides and Neurotrophic Factors in Seizure Modulation

    Författare :Avtandil Nanobashvili; Lund Neurologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; brain slice; entorhinal cortex; hippocampus; galanin; glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor; neuropeptide Y; epilepsy; kindling; Neurology; neurofysiologi; neuropsykologi; Neurologi;

    Sammanfattning : The presented thesis explores role of glial cell line derived neurotrophic factor family receptor a2 (GFRa2), as well as neuropeptide Y (NPY) and galanin and their receptors in modulation of seizure activity. We demonstrate that mice lacking the GFRa2 gene (GFRa2-/-) exhibit suppressed seizure generalization in traditional and rapid kindling models. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Physiology and Pharmacology of GABAA receptors: The Brakes in the Brain

    Författare :Catarina Lindquist; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology; Fysiologi; Ion channels; GABA; Inhibition;

    Sammanfattning : Inhibitory neurotransmission in the brain is mostly mediated by gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptors. These receptors are involved in both phasic inhibition (point-to-point inhibition, synaptic transmission) and tonic inhibition (diffuse form of inhibition, brain homeostasis). LÄS MER

  5. 10. Magnetic resonance imaging in dementia : a study of brain white matter changes

    Författare :Lena Bronge; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Non-specific white matter changes (WMC) in the brain are common findings in the elderly population. Although they are frequently seen in non-demented persons, WMC seem to be more common in demented patients.The significance of these changes, as well as their pathophysiological background is incompletely understood.
