  1. 16. Effects pf hypoxia and antiepileptic drugs of electrophysiological properties of CA1 neurons in hippocampus

    Författare :Marita Englund; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Antiepileptic drug; brain slice; epilepsy; hippocampus; hypoxia; patchclamp; rat;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on three experimental studies (I-III) of CA1 hippocampal neurons in rat brain slices, where the electrophysiological properties are examined with patch clamp technique under hypoxic conditions and during treatment with antiepileptic drugs, respectively. The cells were visualized and identified in the slice by means of infrared differential interference contrast (IR-DIC) video microscopy and the experiments were carried out at room temperature (22-25 ºC). 2. 17. Effects of acute alcohol exposure on glutamate neurotransmission in adolescents and adults : a preclinical study

    Författare :Devesh Mishra; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The age at which an individual first uses alcohol is a powerful predictor of alcohol dependence later in life. Brain development and maturation continues during adolescence until adulthood in humans. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Microfluidics based techniques for electrophysiological studies of cells

    Författare :Aikeremu Ahemaiti; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis work investigates the application of microfluidics to perform electrophysiological studies on cells, including investigations of the effect of cholesterol on the dynamic ion permeability of TRPV1 ion channels, and the application of a microfluidic device, the multifunctional pipette, in electrophysiological studies on brain slices. In the first part of this thesis, Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells overexpressing the TRPV1 ion channel were used in a dynamic ion permeability study, where the activation properties of the TRPV1 ion channel were investigated using the patch clamp technique after depletion of membrane cholesterol. 4. 19. Regulation and physiological role of tyrosine hydroxylase phosphorylation in the striatum

    Författare :Niklas Lindgren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) catalyses the conversion of tyrosine to DOPA and is the rate- limiting enzyme in the biosynthesis of catecholamines, a group of neurotransmitters involved in various brain functions. Short-term regulation of TH activity is achieved by phosphorylation of the protein's regulatory domain at three seryl residues in positions 19, 31 and 40. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Cellular and network mechanisms in neurodegenerative disorders : neurotoxicity and rescue strategies

    Författare :Daniela Papadia; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The brain can be described as a complex network and its functioning depends on an efficient communication between all its components. Large-scale communication is made possible by neuronal-network oscillations. LÄS MER
