1. Olfactory Function : The Influence of Demographic, Cognitive, and Genetic Factors
Sammanfattning : Olfactory function is affected by demographic, cognitive, and genetic factors. In the present thesis, three empirical studies investigated individual differences in olfactory ability. Study I explored demographic and cognitive correlates in common olfactory tasks; odor detection, odor discrimination, and odor identification. LÄS MER
2. BDNF, impulsiveness and avoidant focused coping in suicide attempters
Sammanfattning : Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is an important protein for neuroplasticity and neurogenesis. In this thesis the role of BDNF, in suicidal behaviour was investigated with focus on possible risk factors for suicidal behaviour such as avoidant focused coping, dysfuntional personality traits like impulsiveness and hyperactivity of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis. 3. A Biopsychosocial and Long Term Perspective on Child Behavioral Problems : Impact of Risk and Resilience
Sammanfattning : Mental health has become a prominent issue in society. Yet, much remains unknown about the etiology of psychiatric disorders. The aim of the present thesis was to investigate the association between biological, psychological and social factors of risk and resilience and behavioral problems in a birth cohort of Swedish children. 4. On the influence of dopamine-related genetic variation on dopamine-related disorders
Sammanfattning : Rationale: Dopamine synthesizing neurons are involved in a wide variety of functions. The most prominent dopamine pathways originate in the midbrain. The development, function and survival of these dopaminergic neurons are under the influence of numerous transcription and neurotrophic factors. LÄS MER
5. On the influence of serotonin- and sex steroid-related genetic variation on mood, anxiety, personality, autism and transsexualism
Sammanfattning : Background: The neurotransmitter serotonin has been related to mood and anxiety, and variation in genes that encode important members of the serotonergic system may hence affect mood- and anxiety-related traits. Sex steroids influence brain development, and variation in genes encoding androgen and estrogen receptors, or enzymes needed for sex steroid synthesis, may be of importance for both personality traits and risk for psychiatric disorders.
