  1. 6. Helminths and immunity against tuberculosis

    Författare :Daniel Elias; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :tuberculosis; BCG; helminths; immunomodulation; vaccination;

    Sammanfattning : The efficacy of Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG) is low and incidence of tuberculosis (TB) is high in those areas where helminths are endemic. Protection against tuberculosis requires strong cell mediated immunity while chronic helminth infections induce responses characterized by dominant Th2 responses as well as up-regulated regulatory T cell activity. 2. 7. Atopy in children : association to life style

    Författare :Johan Alm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Anthroposophy; atopy; BCG; children; life style; microflora NRAMP1;

    Sammanfattning : The prevalence of allergic diseases has risen; in some countries nearly half the children suffer from some type of hypersensitivity. The reason for this increase is obscure, but one explanation is suggested to be a changing panorama of microbial stimulation early in life. LÄS MER

  3. 8. On the role of nitric oxide in bladder cancer and renal cell carcinoma

    Författare :Olof T Jansson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :urogenital tract; renal cell; transitional cell; carcinoma; nitric oxide; nitric oxide synthase; cytokines; apoptosis; BCG; cystitis;

    Sammanfattning : The role of nitric oxide (NO) in tumour biology is unclear. There are conflicting reports in the literature whether NO will promote or inhibit tumour growth. The aim of the present thesis was to investigate the role of NO in bladder cancer and renal cell carcinoma. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Formation and role of nitric oxide in host defense reactions in the urinary bladder

    Författare :Edward R I Morcos; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :bladder cancer; BCG; cytokines; urinary tract infection; nitric oxide; nitric oxide synthase; nitrite; nitrate; capillary electrophoresis;

    Sammanfattning : Nitric oxide (NO) is an important biological mediator and cell signaling molecule. It is also involved in several host defense reactions. NO is formed in vivo from L-arginine by the enzyme NO synthase (NOS). However, it can also be formed non-enzymatically from acidified nitrite. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Tuberculosis and HIV interaction in Ethiopian children : aspects on epidemiology, diagnosis and clinical management

    Författare :Ingela Berggren Palme; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Tuberculosis; HIV; Ethiopia; Child; Epidemiology; Risk factor; Mycobacterium tuberculosis; Drug resistance; Molecular epidemiology; BCG; Nutrition; Treatment; Cure rate;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the influence of HIV on childhood tuberculosis (TB) in a high TB and HIV endemic setting. It is based on four studies involving the same study population of 522 tuberculous children and their 25 3 non-tuberculous controls, consecutively enrolled as out- and inpatients at the major paediatric hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
