  1. 1. Phylogeny, diversity and toxin production related to cyanobacterial symbioses

    Författare :Dimitra Papaefthimiou; Ulla Rasmussen; Kaarina Sivonen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Azolla; BMAA; cyanobacteria; cyanobionts; cyanolichens; diversity; HPLC; Nostoc; phylogeny; symbiosis; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Sammanfattning : Phylogeny and morphology were examined for the cyanobionts from the water fern Azolla and the cyanobacterial genus Nostoc originating from symbioses with different host plants (genera Gunnera, Cycas, Dioon, Encephalarthos, Macrozamia, and Anthoceros), the lichen genus Pannaria, and free-living Nostoc isolates from different habitats. Nostoc isolates of Pannaria formed a closely related group, but, in general, no monophyletic nature was attributed to the genus Nostoc, in contrast to the cyanobionts from Azolla which were contained in a unique monophyletic group. 2. 2. Cyanobacteria in symbiosis with plants : Protein patterns and regulatory mechanisms

    Författare :Martin Ekman; Birgitta Bergman; Dave G. Adams; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cyanobacteria; symbiosis; Nostoc; Gunnera; Azolla; nitrogenase; modification; heterotrophic; proteomics; unsequenced; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Cyanobacteria belonging to the heterocystous genus Nostoc, capable of oxygenic photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation via the enzyme nitrogenase, may form symbiotic associations with plants. In these associations most of the N2 fixed by the symbiotic cyanobacteria (cyanobiont) is transferred to the host, which in turn supplies the cyanobiont with fixed carbon. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Cyanobacterial genome evolution subsequent to domestication by a plant (Azolla)

    Författare :John Larsson; Birgitta Bergman; William Martin; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Cyanobacteria are an ancient and globally distributed group of photosynthetic prokaryotes including species capable of fixing atmospheric dinitrogen (N2) into biologically available ammonia via the enzyme complex nitrogenase. The ability to form symbiotic interactions with eukaryotic hosts is a notable feature of cyanobacteria and one which, via an ancient endosymbiotic event, led to the evolution of chloroplasts and eventually to the plant dominated biosphere of the globe. 4. 4. Specificity in natural and artificial cyanobacterial symbioses

    Författare :Malin Nilsson; Kristina Lindström; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Sammanfattning : Cyanobacteria, primarily of the genus Nostoc, form symbioses with a wide variety of plants. The diversity of cyanobacterial strains in these symbioses, and the specificity of interaction, vary greatly. A high diversity at the strain level has been suggested for bryophytes and cycads, whereas a low diversity is found in lichens. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Effects and Dynamics of Insertion Sequences in the Evolution of Cyanobacteria

    Författare :Carl Theoden Vigil Stenman; Birgitta Bergman; Andersson Siv; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cyanobacteria; Insertion Sequences; Evolution; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Cyanobacteria are globally widespread and ecologically highly significant photoautotrophic microorganisms, with diverse geno- and phenotypic characters unprecedented among prokaryotes. This phylum embraces representatives with an exclusive adaptability in highly specialized environments, from oligotrophic ocean waters to the interior of cells in symbiotic plants, the most extreme being the chloroplasts.
