21. Glial cell responses, complement and clusterin expression after lesions in central or peripheral nervous system
Sammanfattning : The present Thesis examines the expression and role of complement and the complement regulator clusterin after central or peripheral axon injury in relation to the responses of non-neuronal cells. Following peripheral sensory nerve injury, complement was expressed in the spinal cord and brain stem in association with reactive microglia, which also appeared to be a local source of complement. 22. The use of adipose derived stem cells in spinal cord and peripheral nerve repair
Sammanfattning : Clinically, injuries affecting the spinal cord or peripheral nerves can leave those affected with severe disability and, at present, there are limited options for treatment. Peripheral nerve injury with a significant gap between the proximal and distal stumps is currently treated with autologous nerve grafting but this is limited by availability of donor nerve and has associated morbidities. 23. Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells and injections of microRNA as therapeutics for nervous system repair
Sammanfattning : Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord (SCI) and peripheral nerve (PNI) affect several thousand people worldwide every year. At present, there is no effective treatment for SCI and despite continuous improvements in microsurgical reconstructive techniques for PNI, many patients are still left with permanent, devastating neurological dysfunction. 24. Diagnosis and monitoring of sport-related concussion
Sammanfattning : Background: Concussions are one of the most common sport-related injuries and it is known that they cause axonal and glial damage, and that there are risks for long-term effects. The aims of this thesis were to find possible methods, which may help clinicians to diagnose and monitor mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), analyse the APOEε4 allele genotype that has been associated with poor outcome after TBI and evaluate the relationship between neuropsychological assessment and brain injury biomarkers in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). 25. Cell therapy for spinal cord injury, studies of motor and sensory systems
Sammanfattning : Spinal cord injury represents a significant medical concern, affecting thousands of individuals each year. The majority of victims are young males harmed by traffic accidents, violence, and falls. Severe spinal cord injury interupts nerve fiber pathways connecting the brain and the rest of the body.
