16. A database of single scattering properties for hydrometeors at microwave and sub-millimetre frequencies
Sammanfattning : Remote sensing observations of hydrometeors (ice or liquid water particles) at microwave and sub-millimetre wavelengths provide important input to numerical weather forecasting through data assimilation and give insight to cloud processes that are relevant for climate prediction. The utilization of such measurements requires information on the single scattering properties (SSP), i. LÄS MER
17. Aerosol-water interaction at sub and super-saturated regimes : From small scale molecular mechanisms to large scale atmospheric models
Sammanfattning : The term “atmospheric aerosol” refers to solid or liquid particles suspended in the atmosphere. Atmospheric aerosols influence the Earth’s energy budget directly by scattering and absorbing radiation (known as the direct aerosol effect) and indirectly by acting as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and ice nucleating particles and thereby modifying cloud properties (known as the indirect aerosol effect). 18. Process based Modelling of Chemical and Physical Aerosol Properties Relevant for Climate and Health
Sammanfattning : Atmospheric aerosol particles have substantial influence on climate and air quality. However, the anthropogenic influence on the atmospheric aerosol is still poorly known. This limits the understanding of past and future climate changes. LÄS MER
19. SAR Remote Sensing of Forests, from Microwaves to VHF
Sammanfattning : The number of SAR systems available for civilian remote sensing purposes has grown in the nineties. A Synthetic Aperture Radar produces high resolution images of the earth independent on daylight and atmospheric conditions. This thesis mainly examines the applications of SAR remote sensing to monitoring forested areas. LÄS MER
20. Ice clouds in satellite observations and climate models
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns the microphysical properties of clouds made up of ice particles, called ice clouds. Ice clouds are strong modulators of the outgoing longwave radiation and incoming shortwave radiation, yet our knowledge on several key ice cloud properties, which govern the magnitude and sign of the net contribution to the Earth’s atmospheric radiation budget, is inadequate.
