  1. 6. Evolution and Ecology of AhR genes in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.)

    Författare :Maria Hansson; Biodiversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; AhR genes; Atlantic salmon; gene evolution; phylogenetics; environmental pollutants; Baltic Sea; ecotoxicology; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Sammanfattning : In vertebrates, studies of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) have been of particular interest due to its direct involvement in the toxic effects exerted by several environmental pollutants, such as PCB and dioxin. After binding to the toxic molecule, this receptor initiates transcription of several genes that are part of the biotransformation battery but most notably the cytochrome P450 (CYP) genes, which results in an excessive release of oxidative enzymes and free radicals. 2. 7. Growth hormone and somatolactin function during sexual maturation of female Atlantic salmon

    Författare :Susana Benedet Perea; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Growth hormone; somatolactin; insulin-like growth factor I; GH; SL; IGFI; GHR; SLR; IGFIR; ovary maturation; reproduction; Atlantic salmon; spawning; pituitary;

    Sammanfattning : Background and aims: The growth hormone-insulin-like growth factor I (GH-IGF-I) system is known to act during sexual maturation of female salmonids, but the specific roles are not known. Somatolactin (SL) is a pituitary hormone closely related to GH and is only found in fish. In some species, including salmonids, there are two forms, SLa and SLß. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Genetic Variation in Mhc Class II B in Atlantic Salmon: Evolutionary and Ecological Perspectives

    Författare :Åsa Langefors; Biodiversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; recombination; genetic variation; Mhc class II B; Atlantic salmon; evolution; population genetics; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The Major Histocompatibility Complex (Mhc) genes are crucial for the recognition of self and non-self peptides by the immune defence system. They are extremely variable in most studied vertebrate species. I have studied the extent and the importance of Mhc variation in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), mainly from the Baltic Sea. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Age-class interactions in Atlantic salmon and brown trout: Effects on habitat use and performance

    Författare :Rasmus Kaspersson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :competition; inter-cohort; density-dependence; growth; habitat; Salmo trutta; Salmo salar; salmon; trout;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the underlying mechanisms and the density-regulatory effects of age-class interactions, using juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) and brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) as study species. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Relations between metabolic rate, migration and behaviour in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and brown trout (Salmo trutta)

    Författare :Linnea Lans; Larry Greenberg; Eva Bergman; Jörgen Johnsson; Karlstads universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Atlantic salmon; brown trout; Standard metabolic rate; behaviour; migration; Ethology and behavioural ecology; Etologi och beteendeekologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning :   ABSTRACT   Migration is common among populations of brown trout (Salmo trutta) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). However, not all individuals in the same population migrate, a phenomenon referred to as partial migration. LÄS MER
