  1. 1. Diversity and phylogeography in Alisma (Alismataceae), with emphasis on Northern European taxa

    Författare :Anders Jacobson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; morphology; phytogeography; chemotaxonomy. Physiology of nonvascular plants; taxonomy; Systematic botany; Baltic Sea; Europe; refugia; post-glacial migration; phylogeography; marsh plants; genetic variation; aquatic plants; Alisma; Systematisk botanik; taxonomi; morfologi; kemotaxonomi. Växters fysiologi inte kärlväxter .;

    Sammanfattning : In the present thesis the phylogeny and patterns of genetic diversity of the plant genus Alisma (Alismataceae) were investigated by means of genetic markers (RAPDs, allozymes, and ITS and trnL sequences). Additionally, morphological studies were carried out in paper IV. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Psychotropic Pharmaceuticals in Aquatic Systems: An Ecological Perspective

    Författare :Melanie Hedgespeth; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ecotoxicology; aquatic; trophic level; pharmaceutical; SSRI; beta-blocker; sertraline; fluoxetine; propranolol; fish; daphnia; snail; predator; prey; behavior; life history; multiple stressor;

    Sammanfattning : Psychotropic pharmaceuticals have been shown to exert a variety of sublethal effects on non-target organisms, even at low concentrations found in the environment (ng/L to µg/L); hence, the aim of my research has been to determine the individual-level effects of psychotropic pharmaceuticals (the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors sertraline and fluoxetine, and the β-blocker propranolol) on behavioral and life history traits in freshwater organisms. Further, this research was directed towards assessing the potential large-scale impacts of these effects on population growth and predator-prey interactions (with community-level implications) via the application of traditional, ecological concepts and models. 3. 3. Methane dynamics in northern wetlands: Significance of vascular plants

    Författare :Anna Joabsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aquatic ecology; marine biology; Hydrobiology; Växtekologi; Plant ecology; climate change; arctic wetlands; northern wetlands; plant-microbe interactions; methane emission; vascular plants; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The studies presented in Papers I to VI illustrate several different aspects of the impact of vascular plants on methane emissions from northern natural wetlands. The subject has been approached on different scales, ranging from the study of microbial substrates in the vicinity of a single plant root, to an attempt to extrapolate some of the results to the entire northern hemisphere north of 50°N. 4. 4. Metal fate and sensitivity in the aquatic tropical vegetable Ipomoea aquatica

    Författare :Agneta Göthberg; Maria Greger; Hans Borg; M.N.V. Prasad; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aquatic plants; vegetables; methyl mercury; metal accumulation; metal effects; thiol-rich peptides; Ipomoea aquatica; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : The aquatic plant Ipomoea aquatica is a popular vegetable in Southeast Asia, often cultivated in nutrient rich and polluted waters. The overall aim of this thesis was to estimate potential risks for human health and reduced plant growth due to accumulation and toxicity of total-Hg, methyl-Hg, Cd and Pb. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Antimicrobials in sewage treatment plants : occurrence, fate and resistance

    Författare :Marcus Östman; Mats Tysklind; Jerker Fick; Erik Björn; Klaus Kümmerer; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biocides; antibiotics; sewage treatment plants; wastewater; sludge; ozonation; activated carbon; antibiotic resistance; antimicrobials; mass flows; LC-MS MS; environment; advanced water treatment;

    Sammanfattning : The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified antibiotic resistance as a major threat to human health. The environment has been suggested to play an important role in the emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria. The external environment can act as a source of resistance genes that could potentially be transferred into human pathogens. LÄS MER
