11. Effector mechanisms of immunity in atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis is a disease of the medium and large sized arterial vessels, characterized by cholesterol deposition, inflammation and fibrosis. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles carrying cholesterol are trapped within the arterial wall. LÄS MER
12. Familial hypercholesterolemia in Sweden : genetic and metabolic studies
Sammanfattning : Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is inherited as an autosomal codominant disease, usually caused by mutations in the LDL receptor (LDLR) gene. Heterozygous FH is a common disease with a prevalence of about 1/500 in most populations. Clinically, FH is characterized by elevated LDL cholesterol, tendon xanthomas and premature atherosclerosis. 13. Gene networks and modules in atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : In this thesis we are using global gene expression profiles to unravel functional gene networks and modules. The focus is atherosclerosis, a disease with manifestations in the artery wall where deposits of lipids accumulate and trigger immune responses causing the development of plaques, which upon rupture can lead to a myocardial infarction or stroke. 14. Macro- and microvascular complications of diabetes: Studies on NFAT (Nuclear Factor of Activated T-cells) as a novel target for the treatment of atherosclerosis and vascular dysfunction in diabetes
Sammanfattning : Diabetes is associated with devastating chronic complications including coronary heart disease and stroke (macrovascular complications) as well as microvascular disorders leading to damage of the small vessels and the development of retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy. The underlying pathogenesis is not clear, but hyperglycemia has been identified as an important risk factor. LÄS MER
