    Sammanfattning : Background: Prescription sedatives are efficient in the treatment of anxiety and sleeping disorders, but are associated with a risk of misuse and dependence, as well as an increased risk of accidents, injuries and overdoses, both in the general population and especially in individuals with other substance misuse. The present thesis aims to investigate prescription sedative use and misuse in two kinds of samples - in the general population, with focus on its association with subjective health and quality life, and in the subpopulation of individuals with opioid dependence, with focus on treatment outcome in opioid maintenance treatment and mortality.     Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to find occurrence of drug side effects in the elderly by studying the association between changes in clinical parameters and prevalence of self-reported symptoms and the use of drugs in an elderly population.     Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with different aspects of drug use in a population-based study with participants 75 years and older. The study was performed within the Kungsholmen Project in Stockholm, Sweden, using data from the baseline survey (1987-89), and the first (1991-93) and second (1994-96) followups In the first two papers we used cross-sectional data (n=1810) to describe tile drug Ilse pattern ill this population (I), and to examine the association between self-reported symptoms and drug use (II).
