  1. 1. Molecular Adaptations in the Endogenous Opioid System in Human and Rodent Brain

    Författare :Muhammad Zubair Hussain; Georgy Bakalkin; Anita Hansson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Endogenous Opioid System; Dynorphins; Lateralization; Alcohol Dependence; Emotions; Traumatic Brain Injury; Anterior Cingulate Cortex; Dorsal Striatum; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : The aims of the thesis were to examine i) whether the endogenous opioid system (EOS) is lateralized in human brain areas involved in processing of emotions and pain; ii) whether EOS responses to unilateral brain injury depend on side of lesion, and iii) whether in human alcoholics, this system is involved in molecular adaptations in brain areas relevant for cognitive control of addictive behavior and habit formation.The main findings were that (1) opioid peptides but not opioid receptors and classic neurotransmitters are markedly lateralized in the anterior cingulate cortex involved in processing of  positive and negative emotions and affective component of pain. 2. 2. How the past becomes present : neural mechanisms governing retrieval from episodic memory

    Författare :Kristiina Kompus; Lars Nyberg; Katrine Åhlström Riklund; Emrah Düzel; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; episodic retrieval; cognitive control; retrieval intention; prefrontal cortex; functional magnetic resonance imaging; event-related potentials; Neurophysiology; Neurofysiologi; diagnostisk radiologi; Diagnostic Radiology;

    Sammanfattning : Remembering previously experienced events can happen as a result of an effortful retrieval attempt. At other occasions, a memory can enter our minds without any apparent effort – or, indeed, intention - to retrieve. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Mind really does matter : The Neurobiology of Placebo-induced Anxiety Relief in Social Anxiety Disorder

    Författare :Vanda Faria; Tomas Furmark; Mats Fredrikson; Predrag Petrovic; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Placebo effect; anxiolysis; SAD; PET; TPH2 G-703T polymorphism; SSRIs; amygdala subregions; prefrontal cortex.; Psychology; Psykologi;

    Sammanfattning : The placebo effect, a beneficial effect attributable to a treatment containing no specific properties for the condition being treated, has been demonstrated in a variety of medical conditions. This thesis includes four studies aimed at increasing our knowledge on the neurobiology of placebo. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Cross-functional brain imaging of attention, memory, and executive functions : Unity and diversity of neurocognitive component processes

    Författare :Petter Marklund; Lars Nyberg; Akira Miyake; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Human memory; executive functions; prefrontal cortex; sustained and transient neural activity; declarative long-term memory; attention; working memory; functional neuroimaging; cognitive control.; Psychology; Psykologi;

    Sammanfattning : The central theme of the present thesis revolves around the exploration of similarities and differences in brain activity patterns invoked by the component processes underlying mnemonic, executive and attentional functions. The primary aim was to identify and functionally characterize commonly recruited brain regions in terms of shared component processes, which has been a largely neglected area of research in cognitive neuroscience. 5. 5. Imaging fear and anxiety in the human brain : Positron emission tomographic studies

    Författare :Håkan Fischer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Psychology; fear; anxiety; panic; conditioning; human; brain; neuroimaging; positron emissiontomography; PET; Psykologi; Psychology; Psykologi; Psychology; psykologi;

    Sammanfattning : Fear and anxiety are central human experiences. However, the relation between aspects of these aversive emotional states and brain function have previously been studied mostly in animals. LÄS MER
