Sammanfattning :
This thesis investigates the Annunciation motif and the use of images in a medieval socio-cultural context. There are almost 400 medieval images of the Annunciation from the period 1150–1550 in Sweden today. It is found in murals, baptismal fonts, paintings, wooden sculpture, stone reliefs, liturgical vessels, textile works and altarpieces. LÄS MER

Sammanfattning :
This dissertation investigates the ambiguous relationship between God and ‘the angel of the Lord/God’ in early Jewish interpretations of Genesis, for example, Gen 16:7–14; 22:1–19, and 31:10–13. Although the designation ‘the angel of the Lord’ does not appear in Genesis 32, this text is included because it exhibits the same ambiguity as the explicit ‘angel of the Lord-texts’. LÄS MER

The Virgin Mary has always stood out in the Christian scenery, yet in ever-changing guises. This study explores the characterization of the Virgin in the poetic works of Romanos the Melodist (ca. 490–560), the great composer of the so-called kontakion. Written for liturgical use, these dramatic songs soon became well-known and immensely popular. LÄS MER

Sammanfattning :
Within the French book of hours C 517e in the manuscript collection of the University Library in Uppsala, the name of the owner, Johannete Ravenelle, appears in a prayer. Examination of the decoration, miniatures and texts demonstrates that ms C 517e is consistent with Parisian art and books of hours around 1400. LÄS MER
