    Sammanfattning : Vascular risk factors are believed to be involved in dementia development by increasing risk of the most common dementia types, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and vascular dementia. The aim of this thesis was to study if risk factors affect key brain pathology directly, by using biomarkers for dementia in preclinical stages, and to assess previous findings in a large population-based setting.     Sammanfattning : Integrins are a large family of membrane-spanning heterodimeric (αβ) receptors that bind to ligands on other cells or to extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins.     Sammanfattning : A number of analogues of (Z)-5-decenyl acetate (1), a pheromone component of the turnip moth, Agrotis segetum, have been synthesised and tested by using single-cell electrophysiology, in order to investigate the relationships between structure and activity, and to elucidate the interactions between 1 and its receptor. Molecular mechanics and ab initio quantum mechanical calculations have been used to provide information on molecular properties, conformational energies and electrostatic potentials, which have been used in the interpretation of the observed activities.     Sammanfattning : Oscillations in the concentration of yeast glycolytic intermediates have been intensively studied since the 1950s, but these studies have so far been limited to observations of average oscillatory behavior in synchronized cultures. Hence, it has remained unknown whether the onset of oscillations is a collective property of the population which requires a high cell density, or if individual cells can oscillate also in isolation.
