1. Enabling socio-technical transitions – electric vehicles and high voltage electricity grids as focal points of low emission futures
Sammanfattning : Today humankind is facing numerous sustainability challenges that require us to question CO2 intensive practices like those present in the transport and energy sector. To meet those challenges, many countries have adopted ambitious climate targets. Achieving such targets requires an understanding of the wider socio-technical context of transitions. LÄS MER
2. Shaping and Exploiting Technological Opportunities: The Case of Renewable Energy Technology in Sweden
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on how the Swedish capital goods industry exploits (or fails to exploit) opportunities within renewable energy technology to build new growth industries and how it, in that process, shapes the diffusion of such technologies on the market. The thesis consists of a covering paper and the work contained in four appended papers. LÄS MER
Sammanfattning : In the literature on diffusion of innovations, it is widely known that the characteristics and socio-environmental settings of adopters do evolve in space and time. What about innovations themselves? During the diffusion process, don’t some innovations continuously alter in space and time? If so, how does the dynamic character of an innovation influence the diffusion process? In previous research, it has been often assumed that innovations do not continuously alter or get modified when diffusing from a source to potential adopters. LÄS MER
Sammanfattning : Although energy transition is considered one of the main challenges of our time, little attention has traditionally been paid to the actors participating in this transition, such as the producers of renewable electricity. Previous energy policy literature and policy- makers have assumed that these producers are incumbent actors of the current energy system, that is to say, large utilities producing both renewable and fossil-fueled electricity. Sammanfattning : In order for the innovation process to be successful, not only do innovations need to be developed and reached the market, but, once they are available for users, they have to spread on a large scale. In the innovation literature, a complete explanation is lacking of why some innovations reach a phase of large-scale diffusion faster than others, including both actor- and system-level components.
