  1. 1. A study of neuropeptide Y in brains of 'depressed' and healthy rats

    Författare :Patricia A Jimenez Vasquez; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Neuropeptide Y; Depression; Animal Models of Depression Antidepressant treatments;

    Sammanfattning : Neuropeptide Y (NPY), a 36-amino acid peptide that was originally isolated from mammalian brain tissue, is widely distributed in both rat and human brain. NPY has a number of physiological actions and affects for example hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis and circadian rhythms, modulates memory processing and food intake. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Pharmacological and genetic modulation of adult neurogenesis in animal models relevant to neuropsychiatric disorders

    Författare :Martin Thor Egeland; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : During the past decade, the modulation of adult neurogenesis has been an intensively studied area of neuroscience due to the implications for understanding of physiological mechanisms in the adult brain and the potential clinical applications for neuropsychiatric disorders. This research has resulted in countless discoveries during a relatively short period of time elucidating mechanistic details about where adult neurogenesis takes place, how the process of neurogenesis occurs and how this process can be regulated at several different steps by, not only endogenous mechanisms which normally maintain a homeostasis of adult neurogenesis, but also by exogenous regulation using genetic and pharmacological modulations to manipulate steps of the process. 3. 3. Serotonin in emotional memory processes : neuropharmacological studies with emphasis on depression

    Författare :Therese M Eriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Cognitive dysfunctions are common in neuropsychiatric disorders including Major Depressive Disorder, but are difficult to normalize by antidepressant therapies and contribute to reduced functional improvement. Cognitive impairments include alterations of emotional memory processes that are early targeted by antidepressant therapies, including Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). LÄS MER

  4. 4. Antidepressive and antipsychotic treatments : effects on nerve growth factor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor in rat brain

    Författare :Francesco Angelucci; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Recently it has been reported that depression and schizophrenia, the two major psychiatric disorders, are characterized by loss of neurons in specific brain regions. Nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) are proteins involved in neuronal survival and plasticity of dopaminergic, cholinergic and serotonergic neurons in the central nervous system (CNS).
