6. Sentinel Node Biopsy in Breast Cancer : Clinical and Immunological Aspects
Sammanfattning : The most important prognostic factor in breast cancer is the axillary lymph node status. The sentinel node biopsy (SNB) is reported to stage the axilla with an accuracy > 95 % in early breast cancer. Tumour-related perturbation of T-cell function has been observed in patients with malignancies, including breast cancer. LÄS MER
7. Oxidant-induced cell death in lymphocytes: mechanisms of induction and resistance
Sammanfattning : Reactive oxygen species (oxidants, oxygen radicals) produced by the phagocytic NADPH oxidase have pivotal roles in immunity. Patients lacking a functional NADPH oxidase suffer from chronic granulomatous disease, which is characterized by recurring bacterial infections and thus manifesting the importance of reactive oxygen species in host defense against bacteria. 8. Inhibition of acute allogaft rejection - experimental transplant studies with biological and chemical immunosuppressants
Sammanfattning : In clinical transplantation immunosuppressive agents are used in combination with the objective to achieve additive effects and less toxicity. A large number of novel drugs are candidates for clinical introduction at this time and experiments in animal models have an important role to play. LÄS MER
9. Vascular targeting for enhanced cancer immunotherapy
Sammanfattning : Induced angiogenesis and chronic inflammation are major components of tumor immunosuppression. The scope of this thesis is to understand the role of the vasculature in anti-tumor immunity and thereby to improve cancer immunotherapy. LÄS MER
10. Factors influencing the inflammatory response and secondary infection in rat pancreatitis
Sammanfattning : A rat~model for bile-induced acute pancreatitis is used throughout the experiments. The model, which is well known, mimics the assumed events leading to biliary pancreatitis. The mortality from acute pancreatitis with this model was 23-33% and 73% of all deaths occurred within the first 24 hours. LÄS MER
