6. Cardiac effects of non-adrenergic inotropic drugs : clinical and experimental studies
Sammanfattning : Background: Myocardial failure and dysfunction is not uncommon during critical illness and following cardiac surgery. For optimal treatment, a better understanding of the effects of inotropic drugs is needed. In this thesis, two non-adrenergic mediated inotropes, milrinone and levosimendan were studied in different models of myocardial dysfunction. LÄS MER
7. Lung mechanics in the aging lung and in acute lung injury. Studies based on sinusoidal flow modulation
Sammanfattning : Knowledge about lung mechanics is of interest in intensive care to adjust mechanical ventilation and in the lung laboratory for diagnostics and evaluation of patients with various kinds of respiratory diseases. In mechanical ventilation a single inspiratory elastic pressure-volume (Pel/V) curve is difficult to interpret due to continuing re-expansion of collapsed lung units over a large pressure interval. 8. Acute postoperative and cancer-related pain management, Patients´ experiences and perceptions in relation to health-related quality of life and the multidimensionality of pain
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes patients in acute postoperative pain as well as patients with acute cancer-related pain in palliative care, and their experiences and perceptions of pain management in relation to HRQOL and the multidimensionality of pain. A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was chosen. LÄS MER
9. Spinal cord ischemia : An experimental study of the spinal cord blood supply and peroperative ischemia detection by a new method of intrathecal monitoring
Sammanfattning : Spinal cord ischemia associated with thoracoabdominal aortic surgery may lead to devastating neurological complications. Improvement in bypass techniques and various adjunctive measures has reduced its incidence, but still 5-10 % of the patients develop postoperative paraplegia. LÄS MER
10. Nitric oxide in experimental sepsis
Sammanfattning : Nitric oxide (NO) is important in the control of blood pressure and organ perfusion. In septic shock, NO produced by inducible NO-synthase (NOS) has been claimed to mediate pathological vasodilation and cell injury, while NO produced by constitutive NOS may be protective in counteracting hypoperfusion and organ injury.
