1. Monitoring Water Availability in Northern Inland Waters from Space
Sammanfattning : River deltas and lakes support biodiversity and offer crucial ecosystem services such as freshwater provision, flood control, and fishing. However, climate change and human activities have affected deltas and lakes globally, altering the services they provide. LÄS MER
2. Some aspects of the Atlantic ocean circulation
Sammanfattning : The present thesis deals with the ocean circulation from two viewpoints: Pro primo, the dependence of the global thermohaline ocean circulation (THC) on the parameterization of the small-scale vertical mixing processes in the interior of the ocean, and, pro secundo, the dynamics of the circulation in the Nordic Seas. The THC is found be crucially dependent on the parameterization of the small-scale vertical mixing, two types of which have been compared: The commonly used constant diffusivity and a, physically more plausible, stability-dependent parameterization. 3. Satellite Radar Altimetry for Determination of Geoid Undulations and Gravity Anomalies
Sammanfattning : The sea level changes both temporally (due to dynamic effects) and spatially (due to sea bottom topography and inhomogeneities in the Earth's crust). Satellite radar altimetry is a remote sensing technique which can be used for e.g. determination of the instantaneous and mean sea level, and gravity anomalies at sea. LÄS MER
4. Detection and classification of sea ice from spaceborne multi-frequency synthetic aperture radar imagery and radar altimetry
Sammanfattning : The sea ice cover in the Arctic is undergoing drastic changes. Since the start of satellite observations by microwave remote sensing in the late 1970's, the maximum summer sea ice extent has been decreasing and thereby causing a generally thinner and younger sea ice cover. LÄS MER
5. Atlantic Water in the Nordic Seas : A satellite altimetry perspective on ocean circulation
Sammanfattning : The Atlantic Water in the Nordic Seas contributes to the mild climate of Northern Europe and is the main oceanic source of heat for the Arctic. The northward bound transport of the warm and saline Atlantic Water is mediated by a topographically constrained cyclonic boundary current along the Norwegian continental slope. LÄS MER
