1. Immunological mechanisms involved in seasonal pollen allergy and allergen-specific immunotherapy
Sammanfattning : Th1/Th2-like T-cell responses were studied by stimulating peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) with allergens or antigens followed by restimulation with mitogens to induce high cytokine synthesis. Allergen-stimulation in vitro induced Th2-skewed cytokine synthesis by PBMCs from birch-pollen-allergic patients. LÄS MER
2. Adverse Reactions after Vaccination and Allergen-Specific Immunotherapy: Contact Allergy to Aluminium and Itching Nodules
Sammanfattning : The aim of the work presented in this thesis was to investigate two different types of adverse reactions, persistent itching nodules and contact allergy to aluminium, after immunization with aluminium-containing vaccines and aluminium-containing allergen extracts used for allergen-specific immunotherapy (ASIT). The first paper describes active parental reporting of adverse events (AEFIs) after a booster dose of diphtheria-tetanus vaccine (DT). LÄS MER
3. Novel allergen preparations for use in allergen-specific immunotherapy
Sammanfattning : Allergy is a common disease in the industrialized countries, affecting approximately 25% of the population. Therefore, there is a need to find new treatment strategies to improve the quality of life for allergic individuals. Today the only treatment that gives long-lasting reduction of allergic symptoms is allergen-specific immunotherapy (SIT). LÄS MER
4. Effect of allergen specific immunotherapy on allergic inflammation in the upper and lower airways
Sammanfattning : Experimental allergen challenge is widely used in diagnostic practice and research in allergy, but its relationship to environmental exposures is not clarified. Both models of allergic diseases have been used in order to examine the effects of allergen specific immunotherapy (SIT). LÄS MER
5. Preterm birth and allergic disease
Sammanfattning : Allergic diseases are very common in children and young adults, while there is an ongoing interest worldwide in exploring the early origins of these conditions. The perinatal period is considered crucial as it encompasses the maturation of gut microbiota and the establishment of an efficient immunoregulation. LÄS MER
