The thesis includes four studies of 100 consecutive patients preoperatively evaluated and surgically corrected between 1992 and 1996 at Linköping University Hospital.     Sammanfattning : The purpose of this thesis was to study in a general adult population the prevalence and incidence of back trouble, predictive factors for new episodes of back pain, new sick leave episodes, and factors important for recovery from back pain.
