1. Exploring the heterogeneity of the hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell pool in cord blood
Sammanfattning : Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a curative treatment for a wide range of malignant and hereditary disorders. It is yet the only clinically established stem cell treatment. LÄS MER
2. Aldehyde toxicity in human oral epithelium
Sammanfattning : Human oral epithelium is an established target for aldehyde toxicity, including from usage of tobacco, intake of foods and fluids, leaching of dental materials, and from mouth inhalation of aldehydes in the work environment. Following establishment of culture/exposure protocols for oral cell cultures, toxicity mechanisms and risk of malignant transformation from aldehyde exposure was investigated, including the metabolic defense offered by alcohol dehydrogenase 3 (ADH3) against formaldehyde toxicity. LÄS MER
3. Function, expression and polymorphism of human alcohol dehydrogenase 3/glutathionedependent formaldehyde dehydrogenase
Sammanfattning : Alcohol dehydrogenase 3 (ADH3), identical to glutathione-dependent formaldehyde dehydrogenase, plays a vital role in the defense against formaldehyde through the activity for the spontaneously formed adduct between formaldehyde and glutathione, Shydroxymethylglutathione (HMGSH). ADH3 may also participate in the metabolism of Snitrosylated glutathione, GSNO. LÄS MER
4. Oxidation of 1,2-Diols Using Alcohol Dehydrogenases : From Kinetic Characterization to Directed Evolution
Sammanfattning : The use of enzymes as catalysts for chemical transformations has emerged as a “greener” alternative to traditional organic synthesis. An issue to solve though, is that enzymes are designed by nature to catalyze reactions in a living cell and therefore, in many cases, do not meet the requirements of a suitable biocatalyst. LÄS MER
5. Structural and mechanistic aspects of alcohol dehydrogenase function
Sammanfattning : Vertebrates possess a complex alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) system composed of multiple molecular forms, which are currently classified into seven classes according to their structural properties. ADHs are dimeric zinc metalloenzymes that catalyze the reversible oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes/ketones using NAD+/NADH as electron acceptor and donor, respectively. LÄS MER
