  1. 1. Variation in age and size at maturation in two benthic crustaceans in the Gulf of Bothnia

    Författare :Kjell Leonardsson; J. Ekman; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Age at maturation; alternative prey; Bergmanris rule; cannibalism; growth; life-history theory; mortality; Mvoxocephalus quadricornis; poikilotherm; Pontoporeia affinis; population dynamics; risk- taking behaviour; Saduria entomon; size at maturation; temperature;

    Sammanfattning : The thesis deals with variation in age and size at maturation in Saduria entomon and Pontoporeia affinis along a depth gradient in the Gulf of Bothnia, Sweden. I have analysed at what sizes and ages animals should mature in relation to growth and mortality conditions. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Extra- and intrafusal muscle fibre type compositions of the human masseter at young age. : In perspective of growth and functional maturation of the jaw-face motor system

    Författare :Catharina Österlund; Per-Olof Eriksson; Lars-Eric Thornell; Per Stål; Malin Ernberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; jaw; limb; human; muscle; morphology; fibre type; myosin heavy chain; muscle spindle; Morphology; Morfologi; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Sammanfattning : Muscles control body posture and movement by extrafusal and intrafusal (muscle spindle) fibres. The purpose of this thesis was to provide insight into the muscular basis for human jaw function at young age. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Phenotype and function of CD25+ regulatory T cells in infants and adults

    Författare :Hanna Grindebacke; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Immunology; CD4 CD25 FOXP3 regulatory T cells; human; allergy; IL-10; Systemic immunotherapy; migration; homing receptors; maturation;

    Sammanfattning : Active suppression by CD4+CD25+FOXP3+ regulatory T cells (Treg) is essential for the maintenance of peripheral tolerance to both self antigens and environmental antigens. Absence of these cells in human newborns leads to autoimmune and inflammatory disorders as well as allergic disease. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Impact of the gut microflora on the digestive system in the suckling rat

    Författare :Frida Fåk; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; probiotics; prebiotics; antibiotics; lactobacilli; bacteria; intestinal permeability; Small intestine; maturation; weaning; suckling;

    Sammanfattning : The postnatal development of the gastrointestinal (GI) system in mammals is genetically programmed, but is, to an unknown extent, regulated by external factors such as the diet and the gut microflora. These factors can influence the growth of the GI tract, the age-related pattern of appearance of digestive enzymes and the decreased intestinal macromolecular permeability at gut closure, normally timed with weaning in young rodents. 5. 5. Immune maturation and modulation in childhood allergies : Aspects of epigenetic, mucosal and systemic immune mediators in allergy development and prevention

    Författare :Johanna Huoman; Maria Jenmalm; Lennart Nilsson; Petra Ina Pfefferle; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : The prevalence of allergic diseases has in the past century increased among children in affluent societies. Underlying causes are incompletely disentangled, but decreased diversity in environmental and microbial exposures could drive allergy development. LÄS MER
