1. Precise Image-Based Measurements through Irregular Sampling
Sammanfattning : Mathematical morphology is a theory that is applicable broadly in signal processing, but in this thesis we focus mainly on image data. Fundamental concepts of morphology include the structuring element and the four operators: dilation, erosion, closing, and opening. LÄS MER
2. Unequal Probability Sampling in Active Learning and Traffic Safety
Sammanfattning : This thesis addresses a problem arising in large and expensive experiments where incomplete data come in abundance but statistical analyses require collection of additional information, which is costly. Out of practical and economical considerations, it is necessary to restrict the analysis to a subset of the original database, which inevitably will cause a loss of valuable information; thus, choosing this subset in a manner that captures as much of the available information as possible is essential. 3. Optimizing sampling of important events in complex biomolecular systems
Sammanfattning : Proteins and DNA are large, complex molecules that carry out biological functions essential to all life. Their successful operation relies on adopting specific structures, stabilized by intra-molecular interactions between atoms. LÄS MER
4. Reliability-Based Assessment and Optimization of High-Speed Railway Bridges
Sammanfattning : Increasing the operational speed of trains has attracted a lot of interest in the last decades and has brought new challenges, especially in terms of infrastructure design methodology, as it may induce excessive vibrations. Such demands can damage bridges, which in turn increases maintenance costs, endangers the safety of passing trains and disrupts passenger comfort. LÄS MER
5. Peripheral Vision : Adaptive Optics and Psychophysics
Sammanfattning : This thesis is about our peripheral vision. Peripheral vision is poor compared to central vision, due to both neural and optical factors. The optical factors include astigmatism, defocus and higher order aberrations consisting mainly of coma. Neurally, the density of ganglion cells decreases towards the periphery, which limits the sampling density. LÄS MER
