16. Gene Expression Studies of Hematologic Malignacies
Sammanfattning : The general aim of this thesis was to characterize hematologic malignancies using gene expression profiling in order to obtain an improved classification and to study deregulated transcriptional networks in leukemia. In the first study (Article I), the gene expression profiles of hematologic cell lines were analyzed to investigate whether such cell lines maintain expression profiles that are characteristic of their primary genetic changes. 17. Vascular density and bone marrow fibrosis in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia
Sammanfattning : Background: In childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the cure rate has now reached 80% in the western world. Even so, 15¬–20% will die from the disease or treatment-related causes, among them children who did not present any known unfavorable features at diagnosis. LÄS MER
18. Optimizing Chemotherapy in Childhood Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Sammanfattning : Despite major advances in our understanding of the biology of childhood acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and the development of new cytotoxic drugs, the prognosis of long-term survival is still only 60-65 %.In the present research, we studied the pharmacokinetics of drugs used in the induction therapy of childhood AML and performed in vitro drug sensitivity testing of leukemic cells from children with AML. 19. DNA methylation signatures in precursor lymphoid neoplasms : with focus on clinical implications & the biology behind
Sammanfattning : Precursor lymphoid neoplasms, namely acute lymphoblastic leukemias (ALL) and lymphoblastic lymphomas (LBL), are characterized by an aggressive proliferation of malignant progenitor B- or T-cells. To improve risk classification at diagnosis, better prognostic and treatment stratifying biomarkers are needed. LÄS MER
20. Studies of cerebral blood flow and cerebrospinal fluid in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia
Sammanfattning : Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common childhood malignancy and more than 80% of the patients are cured today. Treatment might cause side effects and central nervous system (CNS) irradiation has been replaced by systemic high-dose methotrexate (MTX) and intrathecal (IT) MTX due to the risk of late effects.
