1. Epidemiology of kidney failure and glomerulonephritis in Sweden. Hereditary and non-hereditary factors
Sammanfattning : Background: Kidney disease is recognised as an important worldwide health burden. Kidney failure is the result of acute and chronic kidney disease and is associated with morbidity and mortality. Chronic kidney failure is associated with high-costs for society and low quality of life. LÄS MER
2. Endogenous proteins as markers of glomerular function and dysfunction
Sammanfattning : Plasma and urine concentrations of endogenous proteins are frequently used in the diagnosis of kidney diseases and in studies of glomerular filter function. The main issues addressed in these studies were: storage of urine samples for subsequent protein analysis, use of protein concentrations in urine and in plasma in health and as markers of glomerular diseases, and the application of renal plasma-to-urine clearance of endogenous proteins in estimating the size-selectivity properties of the glomerular capillary wall. 3. Urinary Biomarkers and Patient Outcome in Chronic Kidney Disease and Atherosclerotic Heart Disease: The value of IgM-uria and IgG-uria
Sammanfattning : Risk stratification of patients with chronic kidney disease and atherosclerotic heart disease is crucial. Microalbuminuria (MA) is associated with an increased risk of kidney and cardiovascular (CV) death, especially in patients with diabetes. LÄS MER
4. Complement aberrations and autoantibodies to complement proteins in relation to disease mechanisms
Sammanfattning : The complement system, a part of the innate immune system with several links to the adaptive immune system, plays an important role in the pathogenesis of many diseases. The purpose of this thesis was to document and clarify some of these mechanisms. The thesis is based on four papers (I-IV). LÄS MER
5. Group A Streptococci; Epidemiology and Genetics of Antibiotic Resistance
Sammanfattning : Group A streptococci (GAS) cause throat and skin infections, severe invasive diseases as well as the non-suppurative complications acute rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis. GAS have retained susceptibility to betalactam drugs, but resistance to alternative antibiotics is of concern. LÄS MER
