1. Nano-Engineered Contrast Agents : Toward Multimodal Imaging and Acoustophoresis
Sammanfattning : Diagnostic ultrasound (US) is safer, quicker and cheaper than other diagnostic imaging modalities. Over the past two decades, the applications of US imaging has been widened due to the development of injectable, compressible and encapsulated microbubbles (MBs) that provide an opportunity to improve conventional echocardiographic imaging, blood flow assessment and molecular imaging. 2. Clinical applications of acoustophoresis in blood based diagnostics
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, acoustofluidics has been used to process blood samples as a sample preparation step prior to biomarker detection. This is often required as the large amount of blood cells otherwise can interfere with the detection method. Acoustofluidics means moving particles or cells with acoustic forces within microfluidic channels. LÄS MER
3. On microchannel acoustophoresis - Experimental considerations and life science applications
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents experimental studies of microchannel acoustophoresis, a technique for manipulation of microscopic objects in suspension by means of acoustic radiation forces induced by ultrasonic standing wave fields. By arranging an acoustic resonance across the width of a microchannel, the path of individual cells or microparticles can be deflected orthogonally to the fluid flow. LÄS MER
4. Label-free processing of stem cell preparations by acoustophoresis
Sammanfattning : The first bone marrow transplant in a human was performed in 1959, providing evidence that cells can be used for transplantation and treatment, revealing that healing capacities lie within the human body that ought to be understood. Since then hematopoietic stem cell transplantation has developed as a standard treatment for many cancers besides other malignancies. LÄS MER
5. Acoustic Forces in Cytometry and Biomedical Applications: Multidimensional Acoustophoresis
Sammanfattning : Over the last decades the ongoing work in the fields of Lab-on-a-Chip and Micro-Total-Analysis-Systems has led to the discovery of new or improved ways to handle and analyse small volumes of biofluids and complex biosuspensions. The benefits of working on the microscale include: miniaturization of the analysis systems with less need for large sample volumes; temporal and spatial control of suspended particle/cell positions; low volume sheath flow lamination or mixing; novel separation techniques by using forces inherent to the microscale domain; precise regulation of sample temperatures and rapid analysis with less volumes needed to be processed.
