16. Apolipoprotein E and Alzheimer's diseases : signals and effects
Sammanfattning : Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is the most frequent cause of dementia in the elderly. A diagnosis of AD is confirmed post-mortem by the accumulation of neuritic plaques (NP) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) in brain tissue. LÄS MER
17. Leukotriene C4 synthesis and export in human platelets and leukocytes : LTC4 synthase expression in normal and leukemic myeloid cells
Sammanfattning : Leukotriene (LT)C4 synthase catalyses conjugation of the unstable epoxide LTA4 with reduced glutathione and is the rate-limiting enzyme in the formation of cysteinyl leukotrienes, powerful mediators of asthma and inflammation. The presence of LTC4 synthase in platelets was demonstrated by purification and characterization of bovine platelet LTC4 synthase. LÄS MER
18. Studies of induced transcription in response to an activated Ha-ras, TPA and UV radiation in keratinocytes
Sammanfattning : The mutational activation of the Ha-ras gene in keratinocytes has been shown to occur during the initiation step in the mouse skin model for multistage carcinogenesis. Skin tumor promoters such as 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) and ultraviolet radiation (UVR) stimulate a selective outgrowth of initiated keratinocytes to form benign tumours (papillomas). 19. Human polymorphonuclear granulocytes in inflammation : studies with an emphasis on nitric oxide
Sammanfattning : The function of the polymorphonuclear neutrophil granulocyte (PMN) is of vital importance in inflammation. For the defense against infections PMNs are armored with different weapons such as chemotaxis, phagocytosis and production of cytotoxic substances. LÄS MER
20. Biochemical biomarkers at the site of inflammation and in peripheral blood
Sammanfattning : Biochemical biomarkers are small molecular species, naturally varying or experimentally induced, which are measurable in body fluids and which may provide alternative or complementary tools to describe disease processes or to assess responses to pharmacological treatment. The focus of this thesis is inflammatory biomarkers, mediators, chemokines and cytokines that attract immune cells and that regulate the course of the inflammatory process at the site of inflammation.
