6. Assessing District-Heating Sustainability – Case Studies of CO2 Mitigation Strategies and Environmental Cost Accounting
Sammanfattning : District heating (DH) may play an important role in achieving the EU goal of a secure, competitive and sustainable energy supply. Integrated energy solutions based on technologies, such as biomass gasification for transport fuel, electricity and heat production and heat-driven absorption cooling, create new optimisation possibilities through the linkage between heat, power, cooling and transport fuel markets which may reduce the global warming contribution of the energy sector. 7. Precipitating Amine Absorption Systems for Carbon Capture
Sammanfattning : Carbon capture using amine-based absorption is an established technology for the separation of gaseous CO2. It is used in the upgrading of gaseous fuels, and it has also been suggested that it could play a crucial role in the mitigation of climate change through post-combustion carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), and by creating carbon sinks through bioenergy CCS. 8. Noise from Train Cooling Fans
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns a study undertaken on a railway vehicle cooling fan system. Several design modifications were proposed and tested in the laboratory in order to evaluate different noise control measures. The most effective noise control measure involving combining lots of different measures gave 7 dB(A) noise reduction. LÄS MER
9. Toughness of Tool Steel
Sammanfattning : Toughness is the ability to resist tensile stresses in the presence of a notch or crack. Sometimes gross cracking of industrial tools, mould or dies, occurs due to insufficient toughness. As the economic consequences of the gross cracking are serious, the toughness of industrial tool material, generally tool steel, is of paramount importance. LÄS MER
10. Thermal Properties of Clusters and Molecules - Experiments on Evaporation, Thermionic Emission, and Radiative Cooling
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents experiments performed on clusters and molecules, where the three channels of unimolecular decay have been studied. Evaporation from protonated and negatively charged water cluster have yielded size dependent heat capacities, where the smallest sizes with fewer than $21$ molecules show a heat capacity similar to bulk ice whereas clusters with molecules between $21$ and $300$ have a heat capacity in between that of ice and liquid water.
