6. Understanding and manipulating primary cell walls in plant cell suspension cultures
Sammanfattning : The cell wall is required for many aspects of plant function and development. It is also an accessible and renewable resource utilized both in unrefined forms and as raw material for further development. Increased knowledge regarding cell wall structure and components will contribute to better utilization of plants and the resources they provide. LÄS MER
7. Advanced molecular tools for diagnostic analyses of RNA and antibodies in situ and in solution
Sammanfattning : Advanced molecular diagnostics uses in vitro biological assays to detect nucleic acids or proteins even in low concentrations across samples, allowing for the identification of biomarkers, monitoring the course of the disease over time, and selection of appropriate therapy. In this thesis, I focus on development and early applications of several molecular tools of expected value in research, and eventually also clinically. LÄS MER
8. A Gill Filament EROD Assay : Development and Application in Environmental Monitoring
Sammanfattning : A gill filament-based assay for the cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A)-catalysed activity ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) was developed in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and applied to Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus), Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), saithe (Pollachius virens), and spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor). Exposure to waterborne β-naphthoflavone (βNF; 10-6 M) induced branchial EROD activity in all species but the spotted wolffish. LÄS MER
9. Cartilage destruction - Release of type IX collagen in joint disease
Sammanfattning : Cartilage is of vital importance for the function of joints. It is characterized by a prominent extracellular matrix (ECM) that is produced and maintained by relatively few cells of one type, the chondrocyte. LÄS MER
10. Studies on Phosphohistidine Phosphatase 1 : What? Where? Why?
Sammanfattning : Phosphohistidine phosphatase 1 (PHPT1) is a small protein, consisting of 125 amino acids, that catalyzes the dephosphorylation of histidine but does not have any activity towards other phosphorylated amino acids. PHPT1 was identified in 2002, and is so far the only mammalian histidine phosphatase known, but still little is known about its physiological role. LÄS MER
