11. Modulation of serous salivary gland function by the sympathetic nervous system : a biochemical and ultrastructural study with special reference to β-adrenoceptor subtypes
Sammanfattning : The aim of the present investigation was to study the influence of the sympathetic nervous system and of various adrenoceptor agents on enzyme secretion and morphology in rat parotid and guinea-pig submandibular glands. Biochemical methods were combined with electron microscopical techniques. LÄS MER
12. Transport and release of insulin granules during biphasic insulin secretion
Sammanfattning : Glucose-evoked insulin secretion exhibits two phases: The first phase represents exocytosis of insulin granules situated at the plasma membrane, whereas the second phase reflects insulin release from granules continuously recruited to the plasma membrane. This thesis investigates different aspects of phasic insulin secretion, with the specific aims to elucidate the possible contribution of insulin granule transport, as well as to study the influence of the nucleotides cAMP and NADPH to this process. 13. AMP-activated protein kinase : the connection between exercise and type II diabetes
Sammanfattning : Skeletal muscle insulin resistance is a hallmark feature of Type 2 diabetes. Physical exercise/muscle contraction elicits an insulin-independent increase in glucose transport and perturbation of this pathway can bypass defective insulin signaling. LÄS MER
14. Skeletal muscle metabolic flexibility : the roles of AMP-activated protein kinase and calcineurin
Sammanfattning : Skeletal muscle fibers differ considerably in their metabolic and physiological properties. The metabolic properties of skeletal muscle display a high degree of flexibility which adapts to various physiological demands by shifting energy substrate metabolism. LÄS MER
